MURFREESBORO – The North Greene Lady Huskies started the Class 1A State Tournament strong with a 6-0 shutout win over Dresden on Tuesday afternoon.
“It feels good. It’s good to get off to a good start here. I thought the girls played really good defensively. I thought Hannah threw a pretty good game. I felt like she was going right at them and trusting us to make plays behind her. I thought defensively we were really sharp,” North Greene Head Coach Avery Weems stated.
The Lady Huskies and the Lady Lions are no strangers to one another. Both teams met in the 2023 and 2025 editions of the Class 1A State Tournament. Dresden got the best of North Greene in 2023 with a 6-5 win in 10 innings. North Greene then got the best of Dresden in 2025 with a 13-9 comeback win. North Greene and Hannah Brooks shut Dresden down in Tuesday’s contest and are moving on in the winner’s bracket.
North Greene scored six runs on eight hits and benefited from two Dresden errors. Hannah Brooks was solid in the circle and held Dresden to only four hits and walked no batters. Brooks held on to pitch a complete game shutout on 75 pitches with a 69.3 percent strike rate.
“I was really impressed. She was just pounding the strike zone it felt like and got a lot of quick outs. She just produced a lot of weak contact for us. I think she was moving it and spinning it really good. I thought the girls did a good job behind her going and making plays,” Weems stated.
Josie Graham led the Lady Huskies on offense with a team leading three hits and two runs. Graham went 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI. Tralyn Southerland and Charlie Turnmire also had multi-hit days with two hits apiece. Eva Leonard rounded out the hit column with a base hit.
A coin flip decided who was the home team and who was the away team. North Greene was the away team and hit first. Coach Weems emphasized the importance of starting hot and scoring runs first to jump ahead early. The Lady Huskies listened and started with 3 runs in the first inning.
Eva Leonard singled with 1 out and was quickly driven home four pitches later on Tralyn Southerland’s RBI-double. Southerland waited even less and scored one pitch later with Josie Graham’s RBI-single. Graham advanced to second on an error in the field and then stole third on the first pitch of the following at bat. Hannah Brooks lifted a fly ball to right for a sac fly to score Graham.
North Greene led Dresden 3-0 after just 13 pitches in the first inning.
“It was very important to get out to a quick start. We knew it was going to be a coin flip for home and away and we were the away team so we talked about getting to score first and we did. That was really good to get off to a good start there,” Weems mentioned.
The Lady Huskies didn’t deliver any scoring again until the fourth inning. Adi Dean drew a one-out walk and stole second. Charlie Turnmire lifted a line drive into right field for an RBI-single to score Dean and go up 4-0. Heidi Trentham and Kinlea Eastep drew back-to-back walks to load the bags. Eva Leonard lifted a sac fly into right field and scored courtesy runner Kylee Listek.
The final run came in the fifth inning. Josie Graham singled to begin the inning and eventually stole second with her speed. Graham advanced to third on a grounder and scored on a sac bunt by Matti Phillips.
The shutout looked to be in danger in the fifth with two singles, but North Greene’s defense held strong and kept Dresden off the scoreboard. A 1-out double threatened to end it in the sixth, but North Greene lived up to their billing as a great defensive team and scooped up a pair of grounders for two outs.
North Greene finished the job in the seventh and left Starplex with a 6-0 win over Dresden.
The Lady Huskies advance to play McEwen at 1 PM central time on Wednesday. The game will be played at McKnight Field #1.
“We’ve got to come focused and ready to play tomorrow,” Coach Weems stated.
