MURFREESBORO – The North Greene Lady Huskies watched their season come to an end in the Class 1A State Tournament with an 8-1 loss to Gordonsville on Thursday afternoon.
“Not the way we wanted the season to end, but it doesn’t change the season we had and the overall body of work these girls had. I thought they had a really good year with a lot to be proud of. A really good bunch. Even though it wasn’t the end we wanted, it is still a good season and something they can look back and be proud of,” Lady Huskies Head Coach Avery Weems explained.
It was close until the very end until Gordonsville exploded for six runs in the top of the seventh. The Lady Huskies trailed all game and cut the lead to only one run in the sixth inning. North Greene was looking to make magic happen and pull off a comeback, but the wind was sucked out of their sails when Gordonsville delivered a huge statement in the seventh.
The Lady Huskies had 8 base hits, but couldn’t string enough together to score any runs. Heidi Trentham was the only player with a multi-hit game going 2-for-3. Hannah Brooks pitched 6.2 innings and gave up 4 earned runs and struck out 6 batters.
North Greene’s season comes to an end in Murfreesboro for the second year in-a-row and third time in four years. The Lady Huskies end their season with a 25-11-1 record.
Madelyn Kemp helped Gordonsville strike first with a home run in the first inning to lead 1-0.
Eva Leonard singled in North Greene’s first at bat, but three-straight outs ended the inning. Heidi Trentham singled with one out in the third, but received no help afterwards.
Gordonsville added their second run in the fifth inning. Laura Thompson doubled with one out and scored on an RBI-single by Kailyn Roberts.
North Greene had an opportunity to create something in the bottom of the fifth, but nothing came to fruition. Charlie Turnmire and Kinlea Eastep delivered back-to-back singles with one out to load up first and second base. Two-straight outs ended any chance of scoring.
The Lady Huskies did score in the sixth inning and started to heat up. Josie Graham singled to begin the inning. Graham stole second and advanced to third on a grounder. Hannah Brooks delivered an RBI-single to score Graham. Adi Dean singled with two outs and the Lady Huskies had the tying and go-ahead runs on base. A fly out ended the inning and North Greene settled with only one run.
“I think they are a never quit bunch. I think they really try to dig deep when it gets late in the game and their backs are against the wall. Just a never die mentality,” Coach Weems said.
The seventh inning was when the game fell apart for North Greene. Kat Johnson doubled then McKenzie Herron reached first on an error. Laura Thompson was intentionally walked and loaded the bases with no outs. Callie Dillard broke the game wide open with a 3-RBI double to send Gordonsville ahead 5-1. Camri Johnson hit a 2-RBI double into left field to make it 7-1 next. Kat Johnson was the next and last Tigerette to RBI-double. Gordonsville led 8-1 midway through the seventh.
The Lady Huskies were shut down on offense again and were held to only one hit and no runs in the seventh.
North Greene watched their season come to a close after a disappointing seventh inning and lost 8-1.
Matti Phillips, Destiny Fillers, and Lydia Fillers graduate as North Greene’s trio of seniors leaving the program. “They’ve all three been instrumental in different roles,” Coach Weems stated.
