Greene County’s middle school football teams got their first taste of gridiron action on Thursday as they gathered at Camp Creek Elementary School for their annual Greene County Jamboree.
Chuckey-Doak, North Greene, South Greene and West Greene along with Cocke County and Parrotsville took the field for the first time this season, each playing one continuous-clock quarter.
NORTH GREENE 0, COCKE COUNTY 0
The jamboree started with North Greene and Cocke County running out of time before anyone could score.
North Greene held possession the whole time and used its power run game to methodically march down the field. Quarterback Ryder Verran and fullback Rykeir Moratalla alternated running opportunities on the 15-play drive that covered 51 yards.
The Huskies converted two fourth down attempts, but the running clock hit zero before they could find the endzone.
COCKE COUNTY 8, CHUCKEY-DOAK 0
In the event’s second quarter Chuckey-Doak could not get enough going on offense to sustain success and fell to Cocke County 8-0.
The bright spots for the Black Knights were a few impressive scrambles from quarterback Julian Overstreet, but their first series ended in a failed fourth-down conversion and their second series ended in a fumble.
SOUTH GREENE 6, PARROTSVILLE 6
In Thursday’s third quarter South Greene and Parrotsville had to settle for a 6-6 tie.
The Rebels got the board first after the defense recovered a fumble on the second snap of the period.
The offense went to work behind a series of runs up the middle by Brayson Hope. South Greene got into scoring position when on fourth down Keaton Dyer rolled out and found Bryson Cox for an 18-yard gain.
Two plays later Kaden Reaves took a jet sweep seven yards into the endzone for a 6-0 lead.
Parrotsville answered by moving 70 yards in three plays to even things at 6-6.
SOUTH GREENE 0, WEST GREENE 0
South Greene and West Greene finished the night with some highlight plays but no points to show for them in another 0-0 tie.
On the first possession of the quarter South Greene’s defense sent West Greene backward, and a sack by Braevyn Myers forced a punt.
South Greene briefly thought it took the lead on a 51-yard catch and run by Myers, but a penalty brought it back and the West Greene forced a four and out.
On the final drive of the night West Greene’s Cooper Jones made the play of the jamboree by making a tough grab on the sideline with time winding down. The toss delivered by Ian McCamey picked up 18 yards on fourth-and-16 and kept the Buffs’ hopes alive. West Greene’s success ended there and the clock expired before either team could score.
Local teams will begin regular season games next week. A matchup between South Greene and Chuckey-Doak on Thursday will be the Greene Sports Zone Game of the Week.
