Mother Nature put a damper on the evening’s schedule as storms in the area forced the postponement of Greeneville Middle School soccer and football action. However, the weather couldn’t stop the Lady Devils from taking the court, as Greeneville Middle School volleyball posted a 2-0 victory over the South Greene Middle School Lady Rebels.
Head Coach Beth Catron was extremely pleased with her team’s effort throughout the contest.
“I’m extremely proud of these girls,” stressed Catron. “They have worked as hard, if not harder, than any middle school in the state of Tennessee. For them to come out here and be disciplined, doing everything that we have worked on this summer, and picking up the win makes me super proud.”
South Greene had Greeneville on its heels early, as the Lady Rebels opened the contest with service attempts that produced volleys and an early 2-0 advantage. It appeared South Greene had extended its lead to 3-0 after Greeneville sent a return out of bounds. However, after a discussion with the official, it was ruled that the ball had been tipped by a Lady Rebel defender before going out of bounds, reversing the original call and making the score 2-1.
From there, Greeneville took control of the first set. Addi Campbell sent the next 15 serves into play, helping the Lady Devils apply pressure that forced South Greene into several mistakes while also producing some big-time kills. Greeneville used the run to jump out to a 16-2 lead.
“I think that was a very BIG momentum change,” said South Greene Head Coach Brittany Rednour.
The two teams battled back and forth the rest of the first set, but the Lady Devils eventually closed out a 25-9 victory to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
“We had some spurts,” stressed Rednour, “but we’ve got to take those spurts and turn them into full games, and they can play a lot better than that.”
Play better they did.
The second set featured a back-and-forth battle, with the teams battling through 10 ties. Neither team was able to establish much separation until Greeneville grabbed a six-point advantage at 24-18.
The Lady Rebels showed their competitive spirit, battling back to within two points at 24-22. However, the Lady Devils answered by taking the next point and closed out the 2-0 sweep with a 25-22 second-set victory.
Adeline Lawson led Greeneville with seven kills, while Ally Carter finished with eight assists and Brynlee Brotherton recorded 10 digs.
“First of all, South Greene’s got an incredible team,” concluded Catron. “Brittany has done a wonderful job with those girls, and they are going to win a lot of games. We just hope that our girls continue to push and grow every single game.”
