For the second week in a row it’s rivalry week in Greene County as North Greene travels to The Range to take on West Greene with both teams looking for the first win of the young seasons.
“It’s going to be a good atmosphere. It’s going to be a good four-quarter football war. This is what high-school football is all about. I expect a great crowd with everybody supporting their kids, and two football teams that want to win,” West Greene coach Caleb Slover said.
West Greene started the year with a 33-25 loss to Casby and North Greene fell to Chuckey-Doak 60-27 last week.
West Greene leads the all-time series 37-10, but last year the Huskies broke an 18-game losing streak with a 34-7 victory.
Now the Buffaloes are under new leadership Caleb Slover taking over as head coach in May, and the Huskies are prepared to see a new West Greene squad.
“They have changed the culture already,” North Greene coach Eric Tilson said. “They went down to wire against a good Cosby team. That forces us to be on top of what we’re doing. It’s going to be a great challenge for us and we’re going to have to come out and execute.”
The Buffaloes battled with Cosby last week, but they came just short of earning a win. In that loss quarterback Aiden Thompson had a breakout game, running for 175 yards with two touchdowns and throwing for 76 yards. Slowing down Thompson will be the first focus for the Huskies’ defense that gave up over 300 yards on the ground against Chuckey-Doak.
Slover feels like the offensive attack North Greene brings to The Range on Friday will be similar to what the Buffs saw from Cosby. They will have to prepare for a little bit of everything, but most importantly trying to stop receiver Matt Boyd and running back Leon Johnson.
Johnson started the year with 156 rushing yards against Chuckey-Doak and Boyd had eight catches for 101 yards.
“They have some great athletes at receivers, tall kids that can go get the ball. The quarterback gets the ball where it needs to go, and they have a strong running back. They are similar to Cosby in how they attack things. We will see some different formations, and we have to make sure we are lined up correctly,” Slover said.
North Greene has not won consecutive games in the series since winning three in a row from 2004-2006.
Kickoff is set for 7 PM at West Greene. The game will be broadcast live on WIKQ 103.1 FM.
