The Chuckey-Doak Black Knights (5-2, 2-1) prepare for the final non-region contest of the season as the Black Knights travel to Church Hill to square off with the Volunteer Falcons (3-3, 1-3) on Friday.
“Volunteer has a good football team. They play in a really tough league in 4A and have done a really good job,” Chuckey-Doak Head Coach Billy Kaylor mentioned.
Friday night is set to be only the second all-time meeting between Chuckey-Doak and Volunteer with the Falcons gaining a win in last year’s inaugural meeting.
The Falcons are coming off an emotional 32-30 to Northview. It was their third-straight loss after starting the year 3-0. The loss almost certainly dashes Volunteer’s playoff hopes.
Chuckey-Doak is back on track with two-straight wins over Region 1-3A foes and will attempt to keep their run going with a win over Volunteer before reaching the bye week next week.
Volunteer walked into last year’s game 5-1 and left Lower Afton tying a program-record with their sixth win. The vibe is much different this season with the Falcons reeling from three losses and missing last year’s firepower on offense. Volunteer’s offense is a step down from last year averaging 32.3 points per game. Volunteer’s defense has been more impressive allowing only 23.5 points per game and haven’t allowed an opponent to score more than 32 in a game this season.
Coach Kaylor spoke about Volunteer’s offense and the programs they might create. “Very versatile offensively and talented about everywhere. So, it’s going to be tough for our defense to corral them and we’re going to have to tackle well in space on Friday night,” Kaylor mentioned.
Chuckey-Doak is following up on back-to-back wins over Johnson County and Claiborne on the road and are no stranger to road wins with three this season. The offense is averaging 30.1 points per game and the defense is allowing 22.4 points per game.
Volunteer will be Chuckey-Doak’s final road game and final non-region game before finishing the season hosting Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg-Pittman. Chuckey-Doak will enter the bye week next week, but first must make it past a talented Volunteer squad on Friday.
“It’s a good football team top to bottom,” Coach Kaylor stated.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 PM on Friday night at Volunteer High School in Church Hill.
