MOSHEIM – Monday afternoon at Hal “Buddy” Pruitt Field, Chuckey Doak’s Christian Derry and West Greene’s Braden McCamey tangled in an old-fashioned pitcher’s duel that saw Chuckey-Doak prevail 2-1. Both went the distance and each one pitched well enough to win. Derry gained the upper hand keeping the Buffaloe hitters in check, allowing 3 hits (2 singles and a double) while walking one and striking out 11. McCamey matched his counterpart pitch for pitch allowing only 6 hits (4 singles and 2 home-runs) while walking 1 and striking out 6.
West Greene (5-4) was able strike first in the bottom of the 2nd when McCamey, who had reached on a fielder’s choice, advanced to second on a wild pitch, stole third, and crossed home when Connor Campbell’s fielder’s choice drove him in.
That 1-0 lead held until the top of the 4th when Derry led off the inning with a towering fly ball that cleared the left field fence to tie the game at 1-1.
Neither team threatened again until Luke Myers came to the plate in the top of the 6th. With one out in the inning, he collected his second hit of the day, a line drive over the left field fence to give the Black Knights the 2-1 advantage.
Things became exciting in the bottom of the 7th, when McCamey led off with a towering pop-up that, with the help of the swirling winds on the Range, fell into no-man’s land, allowing him to reach base. Following a sacrifice bunt, he was at second base and in scoring position with one out. The Black Knight defense, however, answered the call as Myers gunned him down trying to steal third for the second out.
Derry got the next Buffalo hitter to strike out, ending the game and giving the Knights the win and run their record to 5-2.
The two teams are scheduled to face off again on Tuesday afternoon in Lower Afton. The first pitch is set for 5:00.
