TRACK AND FIELD

Three South Greene track athletes found out on Friday that they had qualified for the Spring Fling. Tripp Neas and Evan Stills will be going to state in the decathlon, and Alexa Gabbard qualified for state in the pentathlon.

All three qualified as wildcards after competing in the East Sectional Decathlon/ Pentathlon last week. The top two finishers in each sectional automatically qualified for the state meet, and the next six best scores from across the state earned the at-large berths.

Neas was first in the 100 meters, long jump and shot put at the sectional and finished third overall. Stills was fourth overall. He was second in the high jump, third in the 110 meter hurdles and third in the discus.

Gabbard was third overall in her sectional. She was first in the long jump, and third in the 800 meters.

TENNIS

A pair of doubles pairs and two local individuals advanced to the finals of the District 1-A Tennis Tournament on Friday at Milligan University and earned berths in the region tournament.

In singles South Greene’s Ari Hoese beat teammate Brooke Howell to claim the district championship. In the finals Hoese beat Howell 6-3, 6-1.

Howell advanced to the finals by beating Danielle Thomas of University High 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 in the semifinals. Hoese beat West Greene’s Megan Hinkle 6-4, 6-1 in her semifinal match.

In doubles West Greene’s Cassidy Hill and Aleea Aiken captured the district crown. In the finals they beat Gaby and Henderson of Chuckey-Doak 6-0, 6-3.

In the semifinals the Lady Buffs beat Adkins and Montejano of Unicoi County 6-2, 4-6, 7-5. Gaby and Henderson beat Townsend and Feltner  of Johnson County 6-2, 1-6, 6-4.

In boys singles University High’s Graham Mefford won the district championship, and in boys doubles Weems and Olson of University High took the top spot.
