The North Greene Lady Huskies began senior night with an emphatic runaway victory over South Greene by the score of 57-14 on Tuesday night. On a night where four seniors were recognized, they combined for 47 of their 57 points to improve their winning streak to 13 games.
“To look down at this book and see you got three seniors in double figures and the other one has been our leading scorer all year and just a very unselfish and humble young lady. That’s special and that’s a special group. We’re definitely happy that they were able to play their last home game and get a win,” North Greene’s head coach James Buchanan mentioned.
Seniors Hannah Miller, Mercy Buchanan, Loren Blevins, and Kaydence Marshall were the quartet of seniors who were making their last regular season starts at home. Blevins led the Lady Huskies with a game-high 18 points. Marshall and Buchanan entered double figures with 11 and 10 as Miller trailed closely behind with 8.
For Coach Buchanan, this group was a special one as always, but a bit more special in his eyes. “This one has my own daughter in it so a lot of those girls have been over at the house a lot for years now. Her and Kaydence go way back all the way to pre-school. So that part is hard. Because I’ve gotten pretty close to this group.”
North Greene improved to 24-4 while South Greene fell to 9-18.
The Lady Huskies have taken pride in bringing the fight to their opponents early. They had no issues with that on Tuesday as they shut out South Greene in the first quarter and led 18-0 after eight minutes.
“We’ve been playing a little bit of zone here lately and it’s been protecting us from foul trouble and there were certain actions that hurt us a little bit we were kind of fortunate we dodged some of that tonight,” Buchanan explained. “We were able to force some turnovers with our pressure early. That was all the stuff we were looking to do.”
It was a three-point party early on with triples from Buchanan, Blevins, and Marshall. Blevins started the game with seven in the first quarter and continued that into the second. After going up 11-0 she managed to score 12 out the next 17 points to create a 28-0 lead.
Madison Fillers scored a layup with five minutes left to put South Greene on the board.
Hannah Miller had been quiet all game until she scored four-straight and six of the last nine to end the half. Ella Head got involved with a pair of foul shots to go with her and-one play in the first. She finished with five points. North Greene held a 37-2 lead at the break.
Good defense by Loren Blevins led to a steal and layup early in the third. Kaydence Marshall and Reagan Arrowood traded three-point buckets next. Madison Fillers made a pair of mid-range baskets next for South Greene. Mercy Buchanan nailed her third three-pointer of the contest late in the third. Marshall also nailed her third and second of the quarter. Josie Graham ended the frame with an old-fashioned three-point play with a layup and free throw combo. In the fourth quarter with a running clock Cadie McDevitt was the final North Greene player to score.
North Greene claimed a 57-14 victory over South Greene. Loren Blevins led the way with 18 points while Kaydence Marshall added 11 and Mercy Buchanan added 10.
Madison Fillers led South Greene with 6.
The Lady Huskies travel to Stoney Creek to play Unaka on Friday in their final District 1-1A game. South Greene travels to Jonesborough to matchup against Crockett on Thursday.
