On a hot, muggy Tuesday night in Lower Afton, Chuckey-Doak and Morristown East kicked off their soccer seasons in dramatic fashion, playing to a 3-3 draw. Both teams created chances and showed resilience, but neither could find the decisive goal.
The Lady Knights struck first, capitalizing on early opportunities to take control in the opening half.
In the 22nd minute Jakindsey Church scored the team’s first goal of the season, cleaning up a rebound after Lindsey Rojas’ shot was deflected by the East keeper.
Just three minutes later, Hailey Williamson buried a direct kick to give Chuckey-Doak a 2-0 advantage, which it carried into halftime.
“I loved how we started off with the 2-0 lead going into halftime,” said Lady Knights head coach Anna Ricker. “I also loved how the freshmen came in, played a lot of minutes, and brought great energy.”
The momentum shifted after the break. Fatigue and injuries began to take a toll on the Lady Knights, and East quickly took advantage. In the 42nd minute, Ava Domingo weaved through defenders to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Chuckey-Doak responded with grit. Rojas delivered a strike from the right wing in the 52nd minute, restoring the two-goal cushion at 3-1.
East refused to back down. Domingo set up Mika Hernandez in the 59th minute to bring the Lady Hurricanes within one, and with just four minutes left in regulation, Domingo again made her presence felt, slicing through the defense to notch the equalizer at 3-3.
The Lady Knights pressed forward in the closing minutes, but their last scoring chance was stopped by the keeper, sealing the draw. Chuckey-Doak finished with 10 shots on goal, while Morristown East recorded seven.
