After months and months of anticipation and preparation, West Greene finally kicks off the 2025 season on Friday night with a trip to Cosby.
The season starts with last year’s Region 1-1A champions and serves as an early test for the Buffaloes on Coach Evan Monroe’s squad.
“They are a pretty good football team. They are well coached and there’s a lot of excitement up there. It’s gonna be a packed house and they’re gonna bring a lot of energy. I expect it to be a pretty good ball game,” Monroe said.
Monroe steps into his 3rd season as West Greene’s Head Coach and is looking to turn the corner and improve from years past. After back-to-back 3-7 seasons, the Buffs are looking to reach the success that the current senior class tasted as freshmen.
He detailed his excitement and what the feeling is like to start a new season. “Nervous excitement. It’s a weird, weird feeling. You get a little antsy as a coach sometimes and you’re excited to get your season started and see all the fruits of your team’s labor come in. I’m about more excited than the boys are to get rolling,” Monroe exclaimed.
The Cosby Eagles claimed their first ever region championship a year prior and look to carry over that same success into Friday night’s season opener. Their success was built on their explosive offense with an average of 27 points per game last season. The same spread offense will be present on Friday night.
“They are not overly complicated, but what they do they execute at a high level,” Coach Monroe explained.
After studying, Coach Monroe explained the Eagles love for the deep ball and named that as one of the main things the Buffs aim to shut down.
“I think we’ve got to take away the deep ball. Make them drive the length of the field on us. Make them be that three yards and a cloud of dust team that they don’t like to be. They want to be an explosive team that make the big plays that make the band fire up. I think if we take away the deep ball we have a chance there,” he stated.
The Buffs will line up against a defense they won’t see very often. Cosby sets up in a 3-3 stack defense with three linebackers stacked on top of three defensive linemen. The Eagles like to bring pressure on the quarterback and will be aggressive with different stunts.
West Greene will sport a different look on offense this year without All-State athlete Austin Franklin. In will step sophomore Austin Brown as the new starting quarterback in blue and gold. There were many holes to fill in the skill position categories after last year’s graduations so expect to hear a lot of new, fresh names picking up yards for the Buffaloes. The offensive line will be sporting four returning starters in what you could call the most integral part of this year’s team.
West Greene is on a 4-game winning streak against Cosby dating back to competitions in 2013, 2014, 2019, and 2020. They are 6-5 all-time versus the Eagles. The Buffs are also looking to snap a four-game losing streak dating back to the end of last season.
Kickoff is at 7:00 PM on Friday night. View all of our post-game coverage here on greenesportszone.com.
