GREENVILLE, S.C. — Filippo Canaletich and Clarenns Sainrimat scored on penalty kicks in the final 13 minutes to boost Tusculum University to a 2-0 victory over Bob Jones University in non-conference men’s soccer Tuesday night.
Canaletich scored in the 78th minute and Sainrimat added an insurance goal in the 90th minute for the Pioneers (1-3-0), who outshot the Bruins (2-3-1) by a 22-6 margin. Noe Delmotte collected his first shutout of the season and third of his career by making two saves for the Pioneers.
Tusculum had all three shots on goal in the first half, but Bob Jones keeper Luke Provenzano made saves on Hugo Le Floch in the 30th minute, Jean Grah in the 33rd minute and Zaki Goes in the 41st minute. Bob Jones did not have any shots on goal in the first half, although Bryce Ramler put one off the crossbar in the 39th minute.
Grah nearly got the first goal for the Pioneers in the 47th minute, but his shot attempt went off the crossbar. The Pioneers continued to bring the pressure until Le Floch was taken down from behind in the box at 77:09. Canaletich stepped up and drilled his first goal of the season on the penalty to give Tusculum the 1-0 lead.
Bob Jones looked for the equalizer late, but Delmotte came up with saves on Bucky Provenzano in the 82nd and 89th minutes. Tusculum was able to clear the ball in the final 40 seconds and Sainrimat had a breakaway on goal, but Luke Provenzano fouled him in the box for a second Tusculum penalty of the half. Sainrimat buried the try with 23 seconds left for his first goal of the season.
Luke Provenzano had 10 saves in goal for Bob Jones, which was shown five yellow cards in the match to zero for Tusculum. The Pioneers had a slim 3-2 edge in corner kicks over the Bruins.
Tusculum will return to South Carolina to face Newberry in a South Atlantic Conference match on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 6 p.m. The Wolves (1-0-1), who play at Southern Wesleyan on Wednesday night, tied Mars Hill 0-0 in their conference opener last Friday on the road.
