Greeneville, the District 2-AA champion, opened the Region 1-AA Tournament on Tuesday night against Sullivan East, looking to continue a streak that dates back to 2010 — earning a spot in the regional championship match. The Lady Devils did just that, rolling past the Lady Patriots 5–0.
“I was really pleased with the way the girls played tonight and their effort,” said Coach Jerry Graham. “Any time you can move on to play in the region championship, it’s a good night.”
Both teams took a few minutes to settle in, but Greeneville soon found its rhythm with precise passing and clean execution. In the 16th minute, Peyton Vaught converted a penalty kick after being tackled from behind in the box to put the Lady Devils on the board.
Just three minutes later, senior Ava Daniel launched a shot that was deflected by the East keeper, but freshman Kinsley Spradlen was in the right spot at the right time to bury the rebound for a 2–0 lead.
In the 21st minute, Spradlen used her speed and skill to send a pass back to the middle, where Vivian Kammerdiener blasted a shot past the diving keeper to make it 3–0 — a score that held through halftime.
The second half opened with continued physical play from both sides, but the Lady Devils once again found their footing. In the 50th minute, Angelynn Diaz sent a cross to Aliyah Johnson, who scored from close range to extend the lead to 4–0.
Six minutes later, Vaught capped the scoring with a driving shot from a tough angle, finding the bottom corner for her second goal of the night.
Greeneville now advances to face Elizabethton in Thursday’s regional championship at 6:00 p.m. The Cyclones also advanced with a 5–0 win over Volunteer.
“We’ll go back and look at the film, see what we did well, and find a few areas where we can defend better,” Graham said of the upcoming matchup. The Lady Devils topped Elizabethton 3–0 earlier this season.
While both teams have already secured sectional berths for Saturday, Graham emphasized the importance of earning home-field advantage.
“It’s nice to have that game promised on Saturday,” he said, “but we want to be playing on Fox Field — our surface and our timeline.”
