Stars, Stripes, And Scoreboard Lights: Greeneville Rolls To Win 70-13 Over Grainger

Decked out in military-themed uniforms Friday night, the Greeneville Greene Devils took the field to honor the men and women who have served and continue to serve our country, and they defended their home turf in commanding fashion with a 70-13 win over Grainger.

The victory keeps Greeneville perfect in region play at 6-0 and sets up a winner-take-all matchup with Elizabethton next Thursday night at Burley Stadium for the Region 1-4A championship.

“What a special night!” said Coach Eddie Spradlen. “It took a lot of work, and we’re really appreciative, not just of our players and coaches, but of everyone behind the scenes who made this night possible.”

The Devils wasted no time getting on the board. Just six seconds into the contest Teagen Begley came off the edge to deliver a big hit on the Grainger ball carrier, forcing a fumble that Jude Dyer scooped up and returned 13 yards for a touchdown. Samuel Gourley’s PAT made it 7-0.

After forcing a three-and-out on Grainger’s next possession, Greeneville struck again when Zaydyn Anderson returned the punt 54 yards for a score and a quick 14-0 lead.

“I told the offensive coaches they weren’t going to get any time on offense after the way we started,” Spradlen joked.

When the offense finally got its chance, it didn’t take long to make an impact. On the first play from scrimmage, Caden Baugh hit Anderson in stride for a 63-yard touchdown strike to make it 21-0 midway through the first quarter. Gourley, perfect on the night, added the extra point.

Greeneville continued to flash its explosiveness. After a punt return touchdown by Anderson was wiped out by a penalty, Maddox Bishop broke free on the Devils’ second offensive play for an 80-yard touchdown run, pushing the lead to 28-0 with 2:10 left in the first quarter.

Grainger managed to get on the board with a touchdown to cut the deficit to 28-7, but Greeneville dominated the rest of the half. Baugh and Anderson connected again, this time from 53 yards out, to finish a five-play drive. Begley then capped a three-play series with a six-yard scoring run. The Devils took a 42-7 lead into halftime.

Greeneville opened the second half the same way it began the first. On the first play of the third quarter, Baugh found Cole Franklin for a 53-yard touchdown, his third scoring pass of the night. Baugh finished with five completions on six attempts for 190 yards and three touchdowns.

Grainger responded with a quick strike of its own as Colton Parrot threw his second touchdown of the game, a 74-yarder, to make it 49-13 after the failed PAT.

With the clock running, Greeneville’s reserves added three more scores to close out the night. Kaine Ricker found Colton Smith for a four-yard touchdown, Parker Quillen connected with Lucrease Parkey from 22 yards out, and Kase Spradlen hit Zy Neal for another 22-yard score to seal the 70-13 victory.

Despite holding the ball for just 12 minutes and 46 seconds, the Greene Devils piled up 438 total yards — 304 through the air and 134 on the ground — on just 24 plays. Grainger was limited to 189 yards on 47 plays.

The Devils now turn their focus to Thursday’s showdown with Elizabethton for the Region 1-4A title and home-field advantage in the playoffs.

“It doesn’t get any bigger than next Thursday,” Spradlen said. “We’re probably playing as well as we have all year, we’re healthy, and we just want to carry this momentum into that game.”
