The few that gathered at a sparsely populated Chuckey-Doak Gymnasium on Saturday night got to see maybe the most thrilling comeback of the early season as the Black Knights raced past University High in the fourth quarter on the way to collecting a 65-60 victory.

The Black Knights played from behind for almost the entirety of the first three quarters, found themselves down 14 points in the middle of the third quarter, and started the fourth quarter in a nine-point hole. Even though things looked bleak at times Chuckey-Doak never quit fighting and found new life in the final frame.

“We came out flat, and University brought it to us. We didn’t match their intensity in the first half. You saw the difference on defense in the second half,” Chuckey-Doak coach Sam Broyles said. “We forced some steals and set up some easy buckets on offense. On Tuesday against West Greene we scored 11 points in the first half and came back to cut it one. We ended up losing, but I think they saw that we are never out of a game. They had that belief tonight.”

Saturday’s fourth quarter began with University High leading 52-43, but the Knights quickly put a dent in it when Logan Malone ran the floor in transition and scored three points the old-fashioned way.

Knox McCamis then drained a step-up triple to close the gap to 54-49 with 7:14 still to play. One minute later Jake Broyles ripped a ball away at midcourt and took it the other way for a lay in that closed the gap to 54-52.

Before the Buccaneers could get back to midcourt Broyles again came up with a steal. This time it set up Ryland Grindstaff for a fade-away jumper from the elbow, and the with 5:09 left to play the game was tied at 54-54.

“We needed those turnovers and Jake gives it everything he’s got. He can really get after somebody. He has moved up the depth chart because of that, and he showed that tonight,” Broyles said.

Chuckey-Doak took its first lead with 4:19 left when a corner three from Gavin Crum made it 57-54.

Chuckey-Doak gained the lead for good at the 1:45 mark when Broyles drove the lane for a lay in that made it 61-60.

University High held possession for the next 1:20 and got off two attempts at the go-ahead bucket, but neither was successful.

Grindstaff and Dom Atchison went 4-for-4 at the foul line in the final 18 seconds to finish out Chuckey-Doak’s comeback.

The early portion of Saturday’s first quarter was played evenly. Chuckey-Doak took an 11-10 lead with 1:57 left in the period when Knox Poston was assessed a technical foul and Atchison made both free throws.

Over the final 59 seconds University scored seven straight points with Ty Templin sinking a triple.

The second quarter began with the Bucs leading 17-11 and then they scored six straight to go in front 23-11 at the six-minute mark. Antwann Yocum got out in front for a pair of fast-break buckets in the run.

A three-pointer by Crum stopped the run, but Chuckey-Doak could not put a dent in the deficit.

University  High’s biggest lead of the night came with 40 seconds left in the first half when Janson West sank a turnaround jumper through contact. He made his free throw to put the Bucs in front 39-24.

Broyles made a three-pointer to close the gap to 39-27 at halftime.

With 4:57 left in the third quarter Connor Gray nailed a triple for University High that stretched the lead to 47-33.

From there Grindstaff got going for Chuckey-Doak as he sank a pair of three-pointers. With five seconds left in the third quarter Grindstaff finished a steal by Crum to close the gap to 52-43.

Grindstaff finished the night with 18 points, Crum had 15, and Atchison scored 11.

For University High West Scored 21 points, Gray had 12 and Templin 10.

Chuckey-Doak erased a 14-point deficit to complete their comeback efforts and win 65-60 against University on Saturday. Head Coach Sam Broyles spoke about what it took to get the job done. pic.twitter.com/hWjnszu0wq
