The Greeneville wrestling team has been no stranger to winning this season, and over the weekend it broke the school record for dual meet victories in a single year. After an undefeated showing at the John Klock Duals the Devils sit at 37 wins with more matches still ahead. The previous record of 35 wins was set in 2017.
Greeneville’s 4-0 performance at the John Klock Duals in Elizabethton showcased the Devils dominance once again. The Devils opened the day with a 48-26 win over West Ridge, then rolled past Holston, Virginia, 58-22 in round two. The margins widened as the tournament continued, with Greeneville overwhelming Knox Catholic 66-12 before closing the day with a commanding 69-12 victory over Northview Academy.
Coach Randy Shelton credited the team’s depth for its late-season success.
“I think the wrestlers wrestled really well, especially for a late-season dual meet tournament,” Shelton said. “We had four good matches against quality opponents. Everybody on the team got some matches, so we kind of made sure our JV kids and some of the kids who aren’t starters got in the lineup to build depth. Depth is what wins late season matches for you, especially at sectionals and state duels where you have the opportunity to put a quality backup in and bump your good wrestlers to get the matchups that you want.”
But before sectionals and state, Shelton’s focus remains on the immediate challenge.
“Regions are gonna be exciting,” he said. “We’ll have volunteer in the first round and Elizabethton in the second round, hopefully, and move on to sectionals. That’s the plan. But right now our focus is entirely on Tuesday night and getting two wins.”
Greeneville will return to action Tuesday night at the Region 1A Duals.
