The Greeneville girls basketball team started hot and stayed that way for the entire game on Tuesday as they took down the Lady Falcons of Volunteer 68-42 while taking sole possession of first place in District 2-3A.
Greeneville head coach Annette Watts spoke of the trio that led the way on Tuesday in Maria Lyde, Brylee Tullock and Julia Woolsey, “It’s not a one-two punch, it’s a one-two-three punch, Julia Woolsey deserves just as much credit as anyone on this team. It’s a wonderful luxury that I thank the good Lord for every night. Julia is the one out there talking and communicating while Brylee and Maria did the scoring tonight.”
Lyde had the hot hand in the first quarter, scoring the Lady Devils first six points of the game and had 10 by the end of the first quarter. It was Tullock’s runner in the lane that put the Lady Devils up by double digits at 14-4 with 2:30 to play and the Lady Devils led by that same margin at 16-6 heading into the second stanza.
The heavy dose of Lyde and Tullock continued in the second quarter. Lyde sandwiched a pair of free throws around a Tullock free throw line jumper in the first minute and a half. Tullock then drilled a triple from the elbow, then as the quarter was coming to a close Tullock fired a full court pass Paizley Christian for an easy layup and a 13-point halftime lead at 28-15.
Lyde scored after a steal and Woolsey was good in transition on a pass from Tullock as the third quarter got underway. Tullock got another steal and went coast-to-coast for the layup to put her team up 21 at 36-15. While Lyde and Tullock were scoring at will, Woolsey was keeping tempo on the defensive end and directing traffic in building a 49-27 third quarter lead.
The fourth quarter was another clinic for the trio, with Lyde and Tullock scoring and assisting each other while Woolsey was keeping things together and running the offense to perfection. The Lady Devils would go on to win 68-42 in a game that was never close.
Tullock finished with 29 points while Lyde had 26 and 10 rebounds for a double-double.
