West Greene’s Lady Buffaloes traveled to Unicoi County on Thursday night riding a three-game winning streak, but after knocking off the Lady Blue Devils just a couple of weeks earlier, the streak came to a screeching halt in a 55-35 setback.
Unicoi County jumped out to a fast 19-8 first-quarter lead as West Greene struggled to find the basket. Brooklyn Sparks set the tone early, scoring 15 of her game-high 31 points in the opening period. West Greene shot just 3-for-13 in the quarter, with Emily Justis and Nevaeh Fillers accounting for three points apiece.
The second period was more balanced, with Unicoi holding a slim 19-17 edge. Sparks remained nearly unstoppable, adding nine points, while Carly Baxter chipped in eight. Payton Norton led West Greene with eight points in the quarter, followed by Erica Davis with five, as the Lady Buffaloes headed into the locker room trailing 38-25.
Unicoi County opened the second half with a 16-4 run, then was outscored 6-1 over the final eight minutes but cruised to the win. Baxter finished with 10 points, and Emma Grace Anders added five.
West Greene is scheduled to host Johnson County on Tuesday night in a District 1-2A matchup, with the girls’ game set to tip off at 6:30 p.m.
