Less than 24 hours after celebrating Senior Night, the North Greene Lady Huskies were back on the court Saturday afternoon looking to close out the regular season with a win over University High. After a sluggish start, North Greene found its rhythm and rolled to a 53-11 victory, positioning itself for a strong postseason push.

“I thought we played hard,” said Coach James Buchanan following the game. “It felt odd coming up here and playing this early on a Saturday for a make-up game that we had rescheduled twice. It was just good to get it in.”

North Greene struck quickly. Tralyn Southerland converted one of two free throws just 25 seconds into the contest, and 17 seconds later Eva Leonard turned a steal into a layup for a 3-0 lead.

The Lady Huskies had several open looks early but didn’t score again until Josie Graham knocked down a jumper with 5:22 remaining in the first quarter. That basket ignited a 19-0 run before Lesedi Williams finally put University High on the board with 1:13 left in the period. Southerland, Ella Head and Natalie Foshie each scored five points in the opening quarter as North Greene built a 21-2 advantage.

Both teams struggled offensively to begin the second period, but the Huskies’ defensive pressure sparked a 14-0 run that sent them into the locker room with a commanding 35-2 halftime lead. Addi Dean and Leonard each added four points in the quarter and finished the game with eight apiece.

With the running clock in effect and a sizable cushion, North Greene was able to give valuable minutes to its bench while resting several players working back from injuries. Veronika Arosikov knocked down two three-pointers, and Head scored four of her game-high 11 points to extend the lead to 49-4.

Alex Boynewicz and Maggie Ryder each scored three points in the final period for the Lady Bucs, while Dean and Satine Johnson added two apiece for North Greene.

The Lady Huskies finish the year at 23-5 (6-2 in the conference) and will enter next week’s District 1-A Tournament at Happy Valley as the No. 2 seed. They are scheduled to face Cloudland in the first round Friday at 7:30 p.m.
