SOCCER
Greeneville 6, Volunteer 0
The Greeneville soccer team took down Volunteer 6-0 on Thursday night in the District 2-AA championship game, claiming the program’s 16th straight league championship.
Sam Gourley and Emerson Hensley scored two early goals to give the Greene Devils a 2-0 halftime advantage.
In the second half Maddox Tucker, Aidan Inscore, Justin Banegas and Caden Jordan added to Greeneville’s lead. Hensley assisted on a pair of goals.
Gatlinburg-Pittman 3, Chuckey-Doak 2
The Chuckey-Doak soccer team battled on Thursday night, but fell to Gatlinburg-Pittman in the District 1-A championship game.
The Black Knights got a goal from Miquel Benitez in the 41st minute and one from Adler Hawkins in the 78th minute, but they could never find the tying strike.
Chuckey-Doak moves on to the Region 1-A Tournament and will play at Eagleton on Tuesday in the semifinals.
SOFTBALL
North Greene 7, Cloudland 1
The North Greene softball team brought home the District 1-1A championship on Thursday by downing Cloudland 7-1.
In the circle Hannah Brooks was in control, striking out 10, walking two and allowing three hits. She was named the tournament’s most valuable player.
At the plate North Greene earned 12 hits and six went for extra bases. Tralyn Southerland was 3-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs. Brooks went 2-for-2 with a home run and double. Addi Dean was 2-for-3 with a two doubles and two RBI. Eva Leonard was 2-for-4 with a double.
Nort Greene will host Hancock County on Monday in the semifinals of the Region 1-1A Tournament.
Unicoi County 20, South Greene 0
The South Greene softball team fell to Unicoi County 20-0 on Thursday in the District 1-2A Tournament Championship Game.
Unicoi pitcher Lela Byrd held the Lady Rebels to one hit. Macy Roberts had a single.
Kortnei Bailey took the loss. In one inning she struck out none, walked none and allowed five hits.
As a team Unicoi produced 16 hits with three doubles and three home runs.
South Greene moves on to the Region 1-2A Tournament and will be at Eagleton on Monday in the semifinals.
TRACK AND FIELD
At the Class AA East Section Track Meet at Maryville College on Thursday Greeneville’s Trey Bailey had a big day on the oval.
Bailey earned the a spot in the Class AA State Track Meet in three different events. He won the 1,600 meters and turned in a personal best time to do it. He also won the 3,200 meters, the event he claimed a state championship in a year ago.
Greeneville’s 4×800 meter relay advanced to state by placing second, 0.01 seconds ahead of third place. That group includes Bailey, Isaac Gibson, Grant Tunnell and Jesse Reneau.
Greeneville’s Mason Marion was third in the 110 meter hurdles and Jayden Francisco was fourth in the discus. Both will have to wait to see if they qualify for at-large spots at the state meet.
The state championship meet will be held on May 19 at Tom Black Track on the campus of the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.
