GREENEVILLE, Tenn. — Catawba College scored four goals in a span of 12 1/2 minutes in the second half to break a tie and defeat Tusculum University 5-1 in South Atlantic Conference women’s soccer Sunday afternoon at Pioneer Field.
Alex Eguren scored a hat trick for the 10th-ranked Indians (7-2-1, 4-0-1 SAC) and Bree Ehmer scored twice in 7 1/2 minutes in the second half, including the go-ahead tally with 15:06 remaining. The Indians outshot the Pioneers (1-7-0, 1-3-0 SAC) by an 11-5 margin in the match.
Carme Escamilla scored for the Pioneers in the 37th minute, and the match stayed deadlocked for the next 37 minutes until Ehmer scored back-to-back goals for a 3-1 Catawba lead in the 83rd minute. Eguren, who opened the scoring in the 34th minute, tacked on two goals in three minutes as she scored in the 85th and 88th minutes to complete the hat trick.
Kennedy McGuire assisted on two goals for the Indians, including the feed to Ehmer on the go-ahead tally.
After Eguren gave Catawba a 1-0 lead at 33:57 on a header off a McGuire cross, Escamilla netted her first of the season at 36:18 as she took a pass from Kirsten Sadlon and chipped a shot over Catawba keeper Lauren Zitt to level the match at 1-1.
Ehmer’s go-ahead goal came when she redirected a cross from McGuire past Tusculum keeper Julia Olsson at 74:54. Ehmer got her second of the day and eighth of the season at 82:!8 off a pass from Ella Matthews, and Eguren stretched the lead to 3-1 when she blasted a shot over Olsson from 25 yards out at 84:28. Eguren closed the scoring at 87:26 when she took a pass from Harper Dussouy and rolled a shot just inside the far post for her fourth goal of the year.
Catawba had a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks, while Tusculum was called for 11 fouls to 10 for Catawba. The Indians were flagged three times for offsides in the match.
Both Zitt and Olsson finished with two saves in goal for their respective sides.
The Pioneers will be home for a non-conference match against Trevecca Nazarene on Wednesday, Sept. 30 at 5 p.m. at Pioneer Field. The Trojans are 5-3-1 overall and are coming off consecutive shutout wins over Lee (1-0) and Christian Brothers (3-0).
