Chuckey-Doak’s Atchison Signs With Cumberland Football

Chuckey-Doak senior Dominique Atchison Jr. signed with Cumberland University on Monday afternoon to continue his football career in the collegiate ranks.

Atchison described the feeling of continuing his athletic career at the next level. “It just feels great to continue my career and knowing that sports aren’t over after high school. Knowing I get to go play football for another four years just feels amazing.”

His future was unknown a couple of months ago. But a phone call made to Head Football Coach Billy Kaylor during baseball season changed that. Atchison Jr. was asked to visit Cumberland and the senior made the decision to join the program for the foreseeable future.

“The whole recruitment process happened a little late for me, but I’m still very thankful. They reached out to Coach Kaylor actually while I was at a baseball game and asked if I wanted to come on a visit. Me and my dad went up there Wednesday and just talking to Coach Mathis and Coach Brown, the offensive coordinator down there, I just really liked what they thought about me and getting me down there. Just liked the campus overall and it felt like a great fit for me,” Atchison Jr. said.

The accolades and achievements he received in his four years are impressive. Dominique was a 2x All-Region selection. He racked up 50 receptions for 900 yards and 5 touchdowns in his senior year as well as 45 tackles, 6 PBUs, 1 sack, 1 fumble recovery for a touchdown, and 2 interceptions. The 50 receptions set a single-season record for Chuckey-Doak’s program. In the classroom he excelled with a 3.95 GPA and was an honors student.

Cumberland University is located in Lebanon, Tennessee. The mascot for Cumberland is the Phoenix. They finished 7-4 (3-3) in 2025. They play in the Mid-South Conference (MSC). Cumberland is in the NAIA. Tim Mathis is the Head Coach.

Atchison has played multiple positions in his time with Chuckey-Doak but looks to stay as a wide receiver in college.

“They feel like that’s the fastest way to get me on the field.  I just want to be on the field and help out the team in any way I can,” he explained.

He described how much Chuckey-Doak has meant to him and the impact it’s made on his life.

“It’s meant a lot. Just to get to play all three sports all four years has definitely meant a lot to me. Sharing the sports life with all my teammates and stuff. Not only just sports, but in the school. Just walking the halls with my friends and having classes and things. It’s meant a lot to me and has a great impact on my life. I’ll love this school for the rest of my life,” he expressed.
