Lady Rebels’ Run Ends With Region Loss To Eagleton

MARYVILLE – The South Greene softball team saw its season come to an end on Monday in the Region 1-2A Tournament semifinals with a 14-1 loss at Eagleton.

“We didn’t bring our best team with us today, but we fought hard and did the best we could with what we had. We had to move people around the lineup, but the girls played hard,” South Greene coach Amy Hawk said.

The Lady Rebels finish the season with an 11-16 record, and the careers of seven seniors come to an end. Whitney Reaves, Paisley Brobeck, Hailey Williams, Reagan Arrowood, Nevaeh Davis, Macy Roberts and Kortnei Bailey have all been staples in the starting lineup and key pieces to the program over the last four years.

“Several of those girls have started every game since their freshman year,” Hawk said. “They have played a lot of softball at South Greene and have accomplished a lot over the past four years. I was proud of them for getting to this stage.”

Monday’s action got off to a promising start with Reaves leading off the game with a line drive to centerfield and Brobeck working an eight-pitch walk. Both runners moved into scoring position, but then Eagleton pitcher Ella Borbeck settled in and struck out the next three batters to end the threat.

The Lady Royals went in front in the bottom of the first. With two outs Maddy Scott fired an RBI single into left field and Graci Fenstemaker got a ground ball through the left side to push the advantage to 2-0.

Eagleton took advantage of three unearned runs in the second inning and increased the advantage to 6-0.

Karleigh Baker knocked home the first run on a groundout to third base. Lyla Campbell beat out a bunt and Molly Davis scored when no one covered the dish on the throw back from first base.

Fenstemaker sent a ball to the left side and after two errors two runs crossed the plate  before South Greene could get out of the inning.

The Lady Rebels got on the board in the top of the third inning. Reaves dropped a single into right field and scored from second when Hailey Williamson split the right-center gap.

In the bottom of the third Eagleton used three hits and three walks to score five more runs. Two runs scored when Maddy Scott hit into a fielder’s choice and Kyla Long drove in one on a line drive up the middle.

Long drove in one more in the fourth and Scott ended the game early when she slammed a two -single through the left side.

South Greene finished the day with three hits. Reaves was 2-for-2 and scored South Greene’s lone run. Hailey Williamson had a single and an RBI.

South Greene played without Bailey, its typical starting pitcher, on Monday and Davis took the loss. In 3 2/3 innings she walked four and allowed 13 hits.
