Athletes from all over Greene County are beginning their quests for state championships this week as the TSSAA’s Spring Fling gets underway.

On Tuesday athletes from all five local schools will arrive at Tom Black Track on the campus of the University of Tennessee in Knoxville looking to head home with gold medals around their necks.

Greeneville distance runner Trey Bailey will be looking to capture a state championship in three events. He is the returning state champion in the Class AA 3,200 meters and has the best time in the state in the event in Class AA this season. Bailey will also run in the 1,600 meters where he set a career best in the state sectionals, and is the top seeded runner at the state meet. He will also run as part of Greeneville’s 4×800 meter relay team.

The Class A Girls pole vault will be filled with Greene County competitors. That starts with West Greene’s Nevaeh Rowe, and South Greene’s Sienna Gabbard who cleared the highest marks in the sectionals and will be the top seeds. South Greene’s Miranda Metcalf and Eva Weems will also be looking to secure their spots on the medal stand on Tuesday.

In the Class A boys pole vault South Greene’s Colton Green and Chuckey-Doak’s Elijah Barker will both be competing for a state championship.

A year ago Natalie Foshie finished second in the state in the discus while competing South Greene. Now she enters the Class A state meet as the third seed and will be looking to become North Greene’s first state medalist since 1982.

South Greene’s Alexa Gabbard, who claimed the state championship in the Class A pentathlon last, week will be busy on Tuesday. She will go into the triple jump as the third seed, but if she matches her best marks of the season it could be good enough for a state championship. She will also compete in the 4×800 relay and the 4×400 mixed relay for South Greene.

In the Class A boys throwing events Greene County will be well represented. In the shot put South Greene will be represented by Heath Norton and Trip Neas. In the discus Parker McMurry will be competing for Chuckey-Doak.

In the 300 meter hurdles Chuckey-Doak’s Landon Brown will be competing in the Class A State Meet, and Greeneville’s Mason Marion will be running in the Class AA 110 meter hurdles.

South Greene’s Noah Case will be starting the Class A State meet at 8 AM on Tuesday in the 3,200 meters.

BASEBALL

The Greeneville baseball team will begin its chase for a second consecutive state championship and third in four years on Tuesday at Smyrna High School.

The Greene Devils will begin Class 3A State Tournament play at 6:30 PM central time against Lawrence County.

Greeneville comes into the state tournament with a 38-8 record, and swept Anderson County in the Class 3A State Sectionals. It won both the Region 1-3A and District 2-3A tournaments.

Lawrence County is making its first state tournament appearance since 1977. The Wildcats won the District 12-3A and Region 6-3A championships before sweeping Martin Luther King in the sectionals. They are 29-8 on the year.

Lawrence County has several capable bats in its lineup and that starts with shortstop Jack Emerson who sports a .402 batting average with 34 RBIs and 16 extra-base hits. Third baseman Jake Moore leads the team with a .458 average and has driven in 33 runs.

On the mound Freshman Brayden Morrison has thrown a team-high 47 innings with 58 strikeouts, 24 walks and a 2.23 ERA. Logan Mays has thrown 42.1 innings with 71 strikeouts, 30 walks and a 2.15 ERA. Greeneville will likely see one of them on Tuesday.

On the same side of the bracket as the Greene Devils and Wildcats are Alcoa (27-9) and Covington (24-12). The four will compete in a double elimination tournament to advance to Friday’s state championship game.

On the opposite side of the bracket and playing at Blackman High School are Crockett County (35-3), Gibbs (31-10), Liberty Creek (30-8), and Heritage (33-12).

SOFTBALL

The North Greene softball team will begin its seventh state tournament on Tuesday at 4 PM central time against Dresden at the Starplex in Murfreesboro.

The Lady Huskies are in the state tournament for the second year in a row. In 2025 North Greene went 1-2, but the team they beat was Dresden, 13-9.

North Greene won both the District 1-1A, and Region 1-1A Tournaments before beating Wartburg 5-1 in the state sectionals.

Dresden is the District 14-1A and Region 7-1A runner up. In the sectionals they beat Memphis Middle College 21-0. This will be the Lady Lions fourth state tournament appearance, the first came in 2022.

North Greene enters the state tournament with a 24-9-1 record while Dresden is 12-13. On the same side of the bracket with North Greene are Gordonsville (24-7) and McEwen (32-7-2).

The opposite side of the bracket includes Eagleville (17-7), Bradford (16-12), Cloudland (20-11), and Copper Basin (18-8). North Greene would not see any of those teams until the state championship game.

SOCCER

The Greeneville soccer team advanced to the state tournament for the 14th time in program history and will take on South-Doyle at 7 PM central time on Tuesday at the Richard Siegel Soccer Park in Murfreesboro in the Class AA State Tournament quarterfinals.

Greeneville comes into the state tournament with a 14-6-2 record. They won the District 2-AA Tournament and were runners up to Elizabethton in the Region 1-AA Tournament. The Devils advanced to the state tournament by beating Fulton 3-2 in the state sectionals.

South-Doyle is 18-1-2 on the year. The Cherokees advanced to the state tournament after winning the District 5-AA and Region 3-AA tournaments. In the sectionals the Cherokees beat Cumberland County 2-0.

The Cherokees have filled up the net this season and have four players with double-digit goals. Leading that effort is Roger Osegura Cruz with 27 goals and 11 assists. Cameron Harp has 17 goals and 14 assists.

In goal Kairos McClelland has 78 saves in 20 games while allowing just 17 goals all season.

A year ago South-Doyle finished as state runner-up to Station Camp. The last time Greeneville and South-Doyle met was the 2024 state championship game, the Cherokees won 2-1.
