The Tennessee Sports Writers Association released its All-State baseball teams on Tuesday and six Greene County athletes were recognized for their tremendous seasons on the diamond.
Four players from Greeneville’s state runner team were selected to the Class 3A All-State Team. Senior Will Harmon earned his second All-State nod, being selected as a pitcher. Seniors Tegan Begley and Maddox Bishop were both named as outfielders, and Greeneville junior Kaine Ricker earned an All-State nod as an infielder.
In Class 2A Chuckey-Doak senior Gavin Crum moved all over the diamond and was named to the All-State team as a utility player.
In Class 1A North Greene senior standout Isaac Gaby was named to the All-State team as an infielder.
Harmon was dominant on the mound this season, and one night he was even perfect. He threw 76.1 innings while going 10-2 with three saves. He struck out 120 batters, walked just 14 and allowed 46 hits with a 1.192 ERA.
He threw a perfect game against Cherokee on March 24 and had three no-hitters.
As a batter Harmon was pretty good as well. He had 10 home runs, turned in a .373 batting average with a .422 on-base percentage. He had 60 total hits with 11 doubles, 60 RBIs and 37 runs scored.
He was the District 2-3A Player of the Year, and District Tournament MVP.
In his only season with the Greene Devils Begley produced some big-time moments on the mound and at the plate as he helped Greeneville return to the state championship game.
At the plate he led Greeneville with a .424 batting average to go with a .541 on-base percentage. Begley earned 61 hits with 16 doubles, two triples and six home runs. He drove in 43 runs and scored 49 runs. He walked 17 times and was hit by 21 pitches. On the base path he stole 30 bases on 31 tries.
Begley was also a weapon on the mound with a 5-0 record and one save in 43.1 innings. He struck out 64, walked 26 and allowed 42 hits with a 2.908 ERA.
Bishop cements a spectacular career at Greeneville with an All-State selection in his final campaign.
The four-year starter finished his senior season as one of the most reliable leadoff hitters around. He hit .372 with a .514 on-base percentage. Bishop had 51 hits, 12 doubles, one triple and five home runs. He drove in 32 runs and scored 52 runs. He stole 33 bases.
Bishop saved some his best moments for the end of the year, including the go-ahead home run against Alcoa in the state semifinals. On defense the centerfielder was a part of 67 outs without an error.
Right behind Bishop in the batting order Ricker was terrific in his junior year with the Greene Devils. He had some of the best offensive numbers in the state, hitting .385 with a .476 on-base percentage. He had 62 hits with nine doubles, four triples and three home runs. Ricker produced 46 RBIs and scored 56 runs. On the base path he was 26-of-27 on stolen bases.
Gavin Crum played wherever Chuckey-Doak needed him this season, holding down shortstop, third base, second base, outfield and pitcher at different times this year.
More than that, his bat was often the spark Chuckey-Doak needed and he was named the District 1-2A MVP. Crum hit .400 with a .486 on-base percentage. He had 38 hits with five doubles and six home runs. He drove in 36 runs and scored 23 runs.
On the mound he threw 41 innings with 46 strikeouts, 17 walks and 41 hits allowed with a 3.585 ERA.
Isaac Gaby was North Greene’s top bat this season in nearly every category, and paired that with some terrific defense to earn his All-State selection.
Gaby hit .448 with a .505 on-base percentage. He had 39 hits with 11 doubles, one triple and four home runs. He had 27 RBIs and 36 runs scored. He struck out just seven times in 97 plate appearances.
On the mound he threw 24 innings with 28 strikeouts, 18 walks and 22 hits allowed. His ERA was 4.083.
