Burlington 16 – Greeneville 5 (8-innings)
Greeneville and Burlington wrapped up their three-game series at Eastman Credit Union Field Thursday evening, and it was the Sock Puppets who came away with a 16-5 victory in eight innings.
Burlington jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Flyboys answered immediately, scoring four times in the bottom half of the inning to take a 4-3 advantage.
After a scoreless second inning, the Sock Puppets regained the lead by plating four runs in the third to go in front 7-4.
Greeneville trimmed the deficit to 7-5 with a run in the bottom of the third, but that would be as close as the Flyboys would get. Burlington scored nine unanswered runs over the final five innings, ending the game by the Appalachian League’s mercy rule.
Deacon Nelson paced the Flyboys offensively with a double and a single. Matthew Kerrigan, Nolan Behm, Ruben Zuany, Amari Jefferson, Jackson Berry, and Gabe Gray each added a hit.
Dillon Kirksey took the loss after allowing seven runs on six hits over three innings. He struck out one and walked three.
The Flyboys return to Eastman Credit Union Field on Friday night to host Kingsport at 7 p.m. for Pirates and Princesses Night.
