The Tusculum University women’s track & field team finished first and the men placed second at the Electric City Invitational, hosted by Anderson University.
The Tusculum women had wins in seven of the 11 events in which the Pioneers competed on Saturday, while the Tusculum men had three victories. Juniors Isaiah Olson and Jahzara Hart each had three victories, as both swept the 100 and 200 meters and were part of their respective winning 4×100-meter relays.
Tusculum will be off next weekend and returns to action at the North Carolina A&T Aggie Invitational on Friday-Saturday, April 18-19.
WOMEN’S RECAP
Hart nearly broke her own school records in both the 100 and 200 but settled for winning times of 11.40 seconds in the 100 and 23.51 seconds in the 200. Junior Kiera Taylor was third in the 100 with a career-best time of 11.78 seconds, and sophomore Alonda Shelton took sixth in a career-best 12.15 seconds.
In the 200, junior Shanice Cox was second to Hart in a season-best 23.91 seconds, with Shelton in fourth at 24.78 seconds.
Junior Theresa Green-White won the 100 hurdles with a season-best time of 13.90 seconds, with freshman Kori Moore placing second and setting a career best at 14.20 seconds. Moore also ran a career best in winning the 400 hurdles at 1:04.79, with grad student Eva Tolliver in fifth at 1:10.15.
In the 400 meters, grad student Tashianna Gray broke her own school record as she placed second in 55.90 seconds. Sophomore McKenzie Morton (57.02 seconds) was third and freshman Qitarah Castlin (57.23) was fourth, both setting career best times and moving into the top five on the program top 10.
The 4×100 relay of Taylor, Cox, Green-White and Hart, which posted the fastest time in Division II last weekend at the Livingstone Blue Bear Invite (44.91 seconds), won the event on Saturday with a time of 45.08 seconds.
Junior Danyell Booker broke her own school record in the shot put for the second straight week, winning the event at 12.74 meters (41 feet, 9 3/4 inches). Senior Amber Hogan finished 10th at a career-best 10.63 meters (34 feet, 10 1/2 inches).
Freshman Agustina Dittrich placed third in the long jump at 5.28 meters (17 feet, 4 inches) and sophomore Kieley Smith was fifth in the heptathlon with 3,777 points, just behind her program record of 3,799 points set at last year’s South Atlantic Conference Championship.
Tusculum had 141 points as a team at the meet, with host Anderson as runner-up with 122 points. Lincoln Memorial was third at 91 points, with Limestone (81) and Newberry (59.5 points) fourth and fifth among the 21 scoring teams.
MEN’S RECAP
Olson won the 100 meters in 10.27 seconds, breaking the program record of 10.29 seconds set by Tyrell Edwards in 2023. Freshman Mica Ruffin was second with a season-best time of 10.38 seconds.
In the 200, Olson was timed in a career-best 20.93 seconds, just off the program record of 20.86 seconds set by Widchard Guervil in 2019. Ruffin added a third-place finish in the 200 and set another season best at 21.14 seconds.
The 4×100 relay of Ruffin, Olson, sophomore Kayvon Pickett and senior Joshua Stephens ran 40.60 seconds to take first place, a season-best in the event for the Pioneers.
Stephens took fourth in the long jump at 6.91 meters (22 feet, 8 inches) after winning the triple jump on Friday.
In throws, the Pioneers had four top-10 finishers in both the shot put and discus on Saturday. In the shot put, junior Gavin Rowell was third with a career-best 15.11 meters (49 feet, 7 inches) followed by junior Adrian Gumm in fourth at 15.08 meters (49 feet, 5 3/4 inches) and senior Jaden Gary in fifth at 14.54 meters (47 feet, 8 1/2 inches).
In the discus, sophomore Dylan Horne took second at 45.21 meters (148 feet, 4 inches) with Gumm fifth at 40.26 meters (132 feet, 1 inches). Rowell took sixth at 39.88 meters (130 feet, 10 inches) and sophomore Michael McGrath was seventh at 39.74 meters (130 feet, 4 inches).
Host Anderson was the meet winner with 118 points, with Tusculum second at 112 points. Limestone took third with 111 points, followed by Augusta (77) and VMI (66) of the 21 teams that accumulated points.
