West Greene’s Morgan Brown has been a standout on the volleyball court, the basketball court and on the softball diamond over the past four years. Now her attention will turn fully to volleyball after she signed to join the Lady Panthers of Pellissippi State in a ceremony in front of her friends and family on Wednesday.
“It feels great to sign today. This is something I’ve wanted for a long time, to go on a play at a bigger level. It will be a new experience, but I’m definitely excited for it,” Brown said.
Brown has not only been a three-sport athlete at West Greene, but she has played all of those sports at an All-District level. She will leave Mosheim as one of the best West Greene athletes in recent memory.
While Brown has loved her time playing basketball and softball, volleyball has always been her favorite and she is excited to concentrate on the sport she loves most at the college level.
“Volleyball has always been my favorite sport,” Brown said. “It’s the one I’ve always gravitated toward. I like the other sports, and they keep in shape, but volleyball is my favorite.”
In Brown’s time at West Greene the Lady Buffaloes have built a reputation for strong defensive play, and a lot of that is because of her refusal to let play die. She will to take that skill set to Pellissippi State where she plans to start out as a defensive specialist.
Pellissippi State is a community college located in Knoxville that competes in the Tennessee Community College Athletic Association. The Lady Panthers are entering their third season as a program and are led by Erika Waycaster, a Chuckey-Doak graduate and former assistant coach at Walters State.
This Lady Panthers went 12-13 this fall in their second season as a program.
“They have a pretty good program, and its new,” Brown said. “I think it will be good for me to get out of my comfort zone. I think it’s an opportunity for me to make my mark like I have here at West Greene. Coach Erika (Waycaster) was the assistant coach at Walters State and did some camps with us. She’s a great coach and great leader, and her being at Pellissippi really made me want to go there.”
Brown plans to study nursing and wants to work in labor and delivery when she graduates.
