JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 12, 2024) – The ETSU football team trailed Samford by two touchdowns with a little over 10 minutes to go in the third quarter but Buccaneers rallied to knock off the Bulldogs, 31-28, on Saturday afternoon from Bank of Tennessee Field at William B. Greene, Jr. Stadium. With Saturday’s win, the Buccaneers improve to 4-3 on the season and 2-1 in SoCon play.

Saturday’s Standouts – Wide receiver AJ Johnson led the Buccaneer receiving corps for the second straight week with seven receptions for 146 yards and a pair of touchdowns. It was Johnson’s first career 100-yard receiving game and the first by a Buccaneer receiver this year. Johnson was the favorite receiver of quarterback Jaylen King. King threw for career-high 268 yards and three touchdowns. King also was ETSU’s leading rusher in the win with 80 yards.

Defensively, the Buccaneers put quite a bit of pressure on the Bulldogs with seven total sacks. ETSU also had nine additional tackles for loss in the win. Zach West and Nick Hunter both had two sacks, while Ray Coney and Damon Early had one a piece. Coney and William McRainey were the leading tacklers for the Bucs with seven stops each with West (six tackles), Cam Sims (five tackles) and Teddy Wilson (five tackles) not far behind.

Next Up – The Bucs won’t take the field next Saturday as it is their bye week. ETSU will return to action on October 26 when they visit Wofford. Kickoff from Spartanburg is set for 2 p.m.
