Black Knights Wrap Hardee’s Classic With 70-42 Loss To Providence

JONESBOROUGH – Chuckey-Doak wrapped up their week at the Hardee’s Classic with a 70-42 loss to Providence Academy in the 7th place game at David Crockett High School on Saturday morning.

“We looked good at times. The team’s growing and we’re realizing who’s going to help this group. We got good guard play at times and good post play at times. But we had too many turnovers and gave up too many offensive boards,” Chuckey-Doak Head Coach Sam Broyles said.

The Black Knights’ own turnovers and inability to grab rebounds hurt them in the end. They held a lead early in the second quarter, but slowly watched Providence methodically run away with the game.

Providence’s press defense forced Chuckey-Doak to commit harmful turnovers that led to many points in transition. “First half we gave up 16 offensive boards and at the same time we had 17 turnovers and we’re only down 6,” Broyles mentioned.

He later said, “We weren’t where we were supposed to be within the press offense. We had people out of position and when you’re bringing it up with someone who’s not used to bringing it up and we’re out of position it causes problems.”

Chuckey-Doak’s guard play was a bright spot in their loss and a look at what the future can hold. Ryland Grindstaff and Dominic Atchison combined to score 33 of their 42 points. Atchison led them with 17 points and Grindstaff delivered 16.

“They did good, but we’ve got to get more scoring as a team. You can’t just have two people doing all your scoring,” Broyles stated.

Grindstaff and Atchison combined to score all 14 of Chuckey-Doak’s first-quarter points to help them lead 14-7 at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter was a turning point in the game. Montrel Sarden scored five-straight to begin the quarter. Chuckey-Doak extended their lead again with a put back from Ben Palazzo and a three-point shot from Gavin Crum. Providence ended the quarter on a 12-0 run to pull ahead 27-21 going into halftime. The run was highlighted by three-point buckets from Austin Beckner, Mason Morgan, and Montrel Sarden.

The Knights managed to snag the lead back in the third quarter, but it was short lived. Dom Atchison started the second half with a three and a bucket from Ryland Grindstaff pulled it back to a 1-point game. Atchison’s steal and layup on the other end followed by an and-one from Grindstaff gave them a 4-point advantage. Providence went on a 14-2 run that changed the game. Nash Martinez scored seven points in that run.

Dom Atchison laid in a putback layup, but another huge 9-0 run carried out by Providence ended the third quarter with the Black Knights trailing 50-35.

The fourth quarter was a runaway quarter for Providence as they kept piling the pressure on Chuckey-Doak and held them to only 7 points in the quarter.

Chuckey-Doak fell to Providence 70-42 in the end. Dominic Atchison led them with 17 points and Ryland Grindstaff scored 16.

Montrel Sarden scored a game-high 20 points. Nash Martinez helped with 16 points also.

Chuckey-Doak returns back to action Thursday at North Greene for an in-county rivalry game with the Huskies.
