The West Greene Buffaloes are 2-2 on the young season but are 0-2 at Jim Sauceman Field and things don’t get any easier this week as the Unicoi County Blue Devils visit Mosheim.
West Greene coach Evan Monroe said, “We’re kind of banged up right now, so we have to go back to the beginning. We’re down four on offense and four on defense, plus we’re have to play lineman roulette.”
The starting quarterback for the last two weeks, Austin Brown, will not be available and that means Austin Franklin moves back under center, where he started the season. Franklin had a punt return for a touchdown and a 75-yard run for another score last Friday night in a 37-15 loss to Eagleton. With the absence of Brown the Buffs do lose a playmaker on the field but it puts the ball in their biggest playmaker’s hands on every play.
The Blue Devils are 3-0 with one no-contest this season and are averaging more than 40 points per game. Even though the Devils are in the 3A division the two teams are not strangers playing every year since 2015. Last week in a 55-3 win over Sullivan East Unicoi County quarterback Kolby Jones threw for 274 yards and five touchdowns. His favorite target, Garrett Sellars had four receptions for 206 yards and four touchdowns. The duo will certainly test West Greene’s secondary on Friday.
In the latest Tennessee Sports Writers Association Poll Unicoi County checks in at No.6 in Class 3A.
Monroe says, “One of our goals this year was to make the playoffs and this game has no effect on that. like I said, we’re a little banged up and if we can get healthy we’ll be ok, we plan to rotate a lot of guys in and out, play a lot of guys and get some experience and we’ll show some new looks and get creative. We need to get through this without any more injuries, get healthy and get ready for South Greene and the other region games over the next three weeks.”
The weatherman says that we’re in for fine football weather and the game is once again on the early slate, starting at 7:00pm in Mosheim.
