Dobyns-Bennett is currently the nation’s leader in high school basketball wins but the Indians could not add to that total on Saturday night South Greene picked up a  62-51 win on Rebel Hill.

South Greene coach Terry Hoese also said, “Scheduling games like this will help us a month from now when it counts. It helps us clean up things so we can compete at a high level.”

The Rebels were hit with a technical foul for dunking in warmup and spotted the Indians a 2-0 lead. Then to start the action Cam Hayworth was good from in front and the Tribe led. 4-0.

Gavin Dyer caught fire for South Greene, hitting a triple from the elbow followed by a put back by Noah Wright to put the Rebels up one at 5-4. Dyer then stroked a corner three that forced Dobyns-Bennett coach Chris Poore to call time out to regroup his Indians. That didn’t slow down the hot Rebels, and it was wright under the goal assisted by Dyer for points on the next possession.

Levi Webb scored on a layup to momentarily quiet the crowd, but Dyer again hit for three, this time from the bend. Dobyns-Bennett would close out the quarter with a short run, but the Rebels had a 14-13 led after one quarter of play.

Cayden Filler cleaned up a missed shot with a put back to open the second quarter and Dyer drilled a triple from the top of the key, but Jeremiah Jones also hit a triple to tie the score at 16 apiece at the 6:50 mark.

Chandler Gamble hit a triple from the elbow and added a pair of free throws just minutes later. Then Jase Roderick finished off the scoring in the first half with layup in traffic and the Rebels were up 28-19 at halftime.

Roderick scored the first points of the second half and Gamble had back-to-back assists to Wright and Roderick respectively. A triple from the right elbow by Trey Gentry and another from Dyer from about the same spot followed. Gamble putback of his own miss to give South Greene its largest lead of the game at 49-31.

The Rebels led by 17 at 50-33 after three quarters of play.

After Gentry buried a triple from the top of the key to give the Rebels a 20 point lead Dobyns-Bennett stepped up the intensity and went on a 9-0 run to cut the lead to 11 at the 4:01 mark.

At that point Hoese was admittedly nervous, saying after the game “We made some mistake in the fourth quarter and blew a 20-point lead by taking bad shots and I got nervous.”

South Greene regrouped when Gamble made a pair from the line and then Roderick hit one of two from the line and drove the lane for a layup. Gamble took a pass from Roderick for a layup to get the Rebs back in front by 13, and the Rebels finished off the Indians by the score of 62-51.

Dyer finished the game with 16 points, Roderick had 14, Gamble 13 and Gentry contributed 10.

The South Greene girls didn’t fare as well as the boys falling to Dobyns-Bennett 56-36.

The Lady Rebels played well in the opening quarter mainly behind Natalie Foshie. Foshie scored the first two points of the game from in front. After that neither team shot particularly well until Nevaeh Davis dropped a triple from the corner at the halfway point of the quarter. Foshie then ended the quarter with a pair of triples and the Lady Rebs led after one quarter 13-12.

The Lady Indians opened the second quarter with a 9-0 run behind the play of Jadeah Releford. The Lady Indians led at the half 23-17, 14 of the points coming from Releford.

The Lady Indians extended their led to 13 points at 39-26 by the end of the third quarter and cruised on to a 20-point win, 56-36 over the Lady Rebels.

Foshie was the lone lady rebel in double figures with 10 points while Releford scored a game high 31 and pulled down 18 rebounds for the Lady Indians.
