Fast starts are always a good sign in athletics, and the Greeneville volleyball team proved that point on Tuesday night, sweeping Johnson County in their District 1-AA opener.
Greeneville wasted no time setting the tone, jumping out to a 5–0 lead in the opening set before cruising to a 25–13 win. Head coach Sara Aiken praised her team’s energy and communication.
“I challenged them to talk through every rally and every touch,” Aiken said. “I thought we sustained that throughout the entire match.”
The Lady Devils’ defense kept Johnson County off balance all night. Manning Click, Willow Aiken, and Brylee Tullock anchored the back row, while Leah Ford, Kinley McCaslin, and Emma Shelton delivered the finishing touches at the net to secure a 25–12 win in the second set.
The third set brought Greeneville’s first taste of adversity, as Johnson County closed the gap to 15–13. That’s when Skylar Blair came off the bench and provided the spark, reeling off a service run that pushed the Lady Devils ahead for good. Greeneville closed out the match with a 25–16 victory.
With the win, Greeneville improves to 2–2 on the season. The Lady Devils will look to build on their fast pace of play and strength to use as a stepping stone into the Showdown at the Sunsphere tournament in Knoxville on Friday and Saturday.
