The Chuckey-Doak volleyball team started fast on Monday afternoon and finished strong in a 3-0 win at North Greene (25-12, 25-11, 25-19).
“I felt like we played with a lot of intensity. A soon as we lost the serve we were immediately siding out, and we were pushing points the whole time,” Chuckey-Doak coach Marissa Snapp said. “I’m really proud of how they played. We had to make adjustments, they had to think in the moment and I’m really proud of them for doing that.”
The Lady Black Knights started the day by jumping in front 8-0 in the day’s first set. Addy Pruitt got the job done at the service line and Isabelle Karriker powered home a pair of kills from the middle.
Karricker had nine kills on Monday and her length in the middle of the net gave North Greene trouble all day.
“She was on fire today. We call her our gentle giant because she is so quiet but so powerful. I tell her our setters to feed who is on fire and they got her the ball today,” Snapp said.
Two aces by Chloe Kirkpatrick followed and Chuckey-Doak’s advantage grew to 14-3.
The lead moved to 20-6 after a block by Karricker and an ace Cristen Bishop.
Late in the set North Greene’s Josie Graham scored on a block, a tip and a free ball, but the Lady Huskies could not close the gap and fell 25-12.
In the second set Chuckey-Doak separated for the first time at 8-5 after Jayden Myers scored on a tip and a kill.
Jacey Taylor then hammered a kill from the left side before going to the service line and reeling off four straight aces on the way to a 21-9 lead.
North Greene’s Matti Phillips broke the streak with a kill, but Chuckey-Doak finished the 25-11 win with kills from Pruitt and Taylor.
Taylor finished the day with 10 kills and four aces.
“I loved those aces, that’s a huge advantage. And her ability to score when not every pass is perfect is vital. She was great today,” Snapp said.
In the third set North Greene found new life and led much of the way. Phillips landed a kill to put the Lady Huskies up 7-5, and Graham put down a slam to make it 9-7.
Chuckey-Doak’s Taylor came up with a kill that evened the score at 11-11 and then Karricker swatted a first-hit kill to make it 14-11 in the Lady Black Knights’ favor.
They traded points until a block by Myers and an ace from Macy Church put Chuckey-Doak in front 21-16. Taylor added two more kills to finish the 25-19 win.
Chuckey-Doak will be back in action on Tuesday at home against Johnson County. North Greene will take on Towering Oaks.
