Led by a suffocating defense and a powerful run game the South Greene Rebels gave the home crowd plenty to cheer about on Friday night Rebel Hill.
The Rebels churned out more than 300 rushing yards on Friday and kept Chuckey-Doak out of the endzone to pick up a 42-0 win over their cross-county rivals.
“I’m really proud of how these guys played tonight,” South Greene coach Shawn Jones said. “This big for our guys. These are the games you remember for the rest of your life, these are the games you’ll talk abut when you get older.”
For the Rebels it was a three-pronged attack on offense led by quarterback Nash Rader who ran for 129 yards and two touchdowns and threw for another 46 yards. Running back Tripp Neas carried the ball for 116 yards and two touchdowns, while utility man Charlie Lane had 90 rushing yards with a score and 46 receiving yards. As a team South Greene produced 401 yards of total offense and 352 of those yards came on the ground.
“Our line was giving us the holes, our line was dominating tonight,” Rader said. “We had big holes all night and we just ran through them. This is a big rivalry for us, and it means a lot to win like this.”
South Greene’s defense forced three turnovers on Friday while its starters allowed just four first downs. In total the Rebels held Chuckey-Doak to 178 yards of total offense with 81 of those yards coming in the fourth quarter. The Knights were held to 64 yards in the first half, and 28 of those yards came on the final play of the first half.
“The biggest thing tonight was to get the shutout. We started the year giving up 26 points, and then 17 the next week. It has come on down. It was seven last week and it’s zero tonight. We were focused and came out ready to play tonight. We were flying around on defense. (Lane) was making plays and (Trent Haynes) was covering a lot of ground.”
The evening started with Rader returning the opening kickoff 45 yards, and with a shot field South Greene’s offense quickly went to work. The Rebels moved into the red zone when Rader went 33 yards on a read option. From the three-yard line Rader charged up the middle, but he coughed up the ball just before crossing the goal line. Lucas Murdock was the first to the loose ball and recovered the fumble for a touchdown.
Brant Wilhoit connected on the extra point and the Rebels were off and running with a 7-0 lead.
On the Rebels’ next drive Lane took it into the red zone when he pulled in a swing pass and sprinted 33 yards through the defense. One play later Neas went off tackle to the right and ran over the defense on the way to a 13-0 lead with 5:15 left in the first quarter.
Brayden Greene got Chuckey-Doak its first first down on the ensuing series, but then freshman Trent Haynes jumped in front of a crossing route and picked off Kiptyn Ball’s pass.
With a short field South Greene covered 31 yards in seven plays. On the second play of the second quarter Rader finished things off by following his blockers in a power set and churned across the goal line. Rader also ran in the two-point try for a 21-0 lead.
South Greene’s next scoring drive was the longest drive of the first half, but the Rebels needed just two plays to cover the 75 yards. Neas traversed the first 38 yards by slipping out of the hands of a pair of tacklers. Rader then went straight up the middle, and once he reached the second level he was off to the races for a 37-yard touchdown.
The Rebels got the ball back with 2:14 left in the first half and managed to add to the lead with 19 seconds left on the clock. Neas rounded the corner from seven yards out and went into the endzone untouched to stretch the lead to 35-0.
With the clock running in the second half Lane produced the biggest play of the evening. He came from the left side of the formation and took a counter going to the right. Once “The Night Train” got a full head of steam behind him there was no catching the speedster as he raced 82 yards for a touchdown.
For the Rebels Haynes and Noah Shelton picked off two more Black Knight passes in the second half and the reserve defense was able to get a stop at the three-yard line as time expired to preserve the shutout.
Greene led Chuckey-Doak’s offense on Friday with 62 yards rushing. Dom Atchison had three catches for 53 yards.
South Greene improves to 4-1 on the year and if it can take down West Greene next week it will have swept its Greene County rivals while claiming the County Cup.
Chuckey-Doak falls to 3-2 and will look to get back on track next week with a Region 1-3A contest against Johnson County.
