Greeneville Turns Bluff City Into Shutout City and Sets Stage for Sevier County Showdown

BLUFF CITY – Greeneville traveled to Bluff City on Friday night with two goals in mind—slow down Sullivan East’s high-powered passing attack led by quarterback Peyton Lingerfelt and pick up a conference win.

The Greene Devils delivered, holding the Patriots to just 240 total yards and forcing three interceptions on their way to a commanding 63-0 shutout. The win improved Greeneville’s record to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in conference play.

“I’m really proud of those young guys stepping in there,” said Greeneville head coach Eddie Spradlen. “We didn’t play any starters in the second half, and for us to keep them out of the end zone—knowing what they can do on offense—and to score a couple of times ourselves was big.”

Greeneville’s offense wasted no time scoring on Friday. On the opening drive, quarterback Caden Baugh found Zaydyn Anderson for a 37-yard touchdown strike, putting the Devils up 7-0 less than two minutes into the game. Later in the quarter, Baugh showed off his legs with a 41-yard scoring run to extend the lead to 14-0.

Just seconds into the second quarter, Taren Claridy capped off another drive with a one-yard touchdown catch, making it 21-0. After a missed 49-yard field goal attempt by Sullivan East, Baugh went back to work. He connected with Anderson for touchdowns of 58 and 85 yards before halftime. Baugh finished an efficient night completing 7-of-9 passes for 240 yards and four touchdowns, while also rushing for 66 yards.

Anderson finished the night with three catches for 180 and three touchdowns, and for the second week in a row he was not tackled while playing offense.

“We’re going to go as that offensive line goes,” Spradlen said. “They’re big, physical, and continuing to get better each week. When East tried to press our receivers, Caden had time to put the ball up, and our speed guys made big plays.”

Before halftime, Claridy added another highlight with a 76-yard interception return for a touchdown, giving Greeneville a 42-0 lead at the break.

The Greene Devils’ explosive offense was only on the field for 4:28 during the first half as Greeneville averaged one point per 6.38 seconds of possession through the first two quarters.

The second half belonged to the reserves, but the scoring didn’t slow down. Kaine Ricker broke free for a 41-yard touchdown run, Yordan Mills powered in from two yards out, and Kase Spradlen scored for the first time as a varsity player with a 32-yard dash to the end zone. Greeneville finished with 234 rushing yards, allowed zero sacks, and never had to punt.

Now, all eyes turn to next week’s showdown. Greeneville will face Sevier County, the top-ranked Class 5A team in Tennessee, in a highly anticipated Thursday night matchup.

Spradlen said facing a quarterback like Lingerfelt provided valuable preparation.

“It was good for us to go up against someone who could extend plays with his arm, because that’s what Sevier County’s quarterback brings to the table. It will be a big-time challenge for our defense, but tonight gave us some good looks and areas we can improve on,” Spradlen said.
