West Greene Comes Up Short In Loss At Unicoi County

ERWIN – West Greene made the trip to Gentry Stadium on Friday night looking to find a late season spark but couldn’t get anything in motion and left with a 42-0 loss to Unicoi County.

The Buffaloes opened the night with promising field position after a strong return from Kyler Patterson to the Blue Devils’ 30-yard line, but went three-and-out.

Unicoi County responded with a statement drive, marching 93 yards on 15 plays and chewing up nearly the entire first quarter before Blaze Rice punched in the game’s opening touchdown. The extra point made it 7-0.

West Greene again went three-and-out, and the Blue Devils continued to dictate the pace. Early in the second quarter, Daven Thompson scored on a short run to extend the lead to 14-0.

After another punt from the Buffaloes, Unicoi County struck again when quarterback Kolby Jones connected with Avery Hatcher deep. That set up a short touchdown pass to Alex Laningham to make it 21-0 with just over six minutes left in the half.

After another three-play drive stalled, West Greene attempted a fake punt but failed to convert. Unicoi County needed just one play to capitalize. Laningham hauled in a 41-yard touchdown catch to make it 28-0.

The Blue Devils added one more score before halftime when Jones found Hatcher again through the air, sending Unicoi County into the break leading 35-0. Jones finished the night 15-of-19 passing for 229 yards and three touchdowns.

The Blue Devils wasted no time in the second half. Jones capped off a quick three-play opening drive with a rushing touchdown to bring the score to 42-0, where it would remain for the rest of the game as the clock ran.

Avery Johnson was a bright spot for the Buffaloes on defense, recording two sacks—one in each half—and helping force Unicoi County’s lone punt late in the game. Despite those efforts, West Greene’s offense never found rhythm facing the Blue Devil’s swarming defense.

Unicoi County controlled possession, converted consistently on third down, and limited the Buffaloes to minimal yardage throughout the night.

The loss dropped West Greene to 0-9(0-2) on the season. The Buffaloes will return home next week to face Cumberland Gap to determine the No.3 and No.4 seeds from Region 1-2A in the playoff.
