“The Red River Rivalry,” “The Third Saturday of October,” and “The Battle of the Milkcan” are all synonymous with fierce competition. On Wednesday night in Greeneville, a new rivalry joined that list — the inaugural “Battle of the Greens” between the Greeneville Greene Devils and the Carter Hornets. At stake: a trophy and the first set of bragging rights in what promises to become an annual showdown.
The boys’ match opened with a tightly contested first game. Carter edged ahead in individual points, 4–2, but Greeneville claimed the bonus points for a higher team pin total (858–825), evening the score at 4–4. Ethan Sands led the Hornets with a 171, while Johnny Pedigo added a 147. Aadin Sandidge paced the Greene Devils with an impressive 205.
In game two, both teams split the individual points again, but Carter’s 889 total gave them the overall lead at 9–7. Chandler Bowman rolled a 184 and Tyton Shuford added a 176 to keep the Hornets in front. Sandidge stayed steady for the Devils with a 162, and Quinten Scalf followed with a 154.
Trailing by just 26 pins heading into the Baker games, Greeneville surged ahead with a 167–155 win in the first Baker, taking a brief 10–9 lead. However, Carter answered back in dominant fashion, rolling a 200–140 victory in the second Baker to secure the 17–10 win and the first-ever “Battle of the Greens” trophy.
The girls’ contest mirrored the intensity of the boys’ matchup. Both teams split the individual points in the first game, but Carter claimed a 5–3 advantage thanks to an 848–762 pinfall. Freshman Zoe Chompff scorched the lanes with a 232 for the Hornets, supported by Kali Gentry’s 162. Greeneville’s Lylli Sopha led the Lady Devils with a 172, followed by Addison Phillips (154) and Carly McLeod (141).
Game two was nearly identical, with both teams splitting individual points once again. This time, the team points were shared as well, as both squads finished with the exact same 787 pinfall, making the score 9–7 in favor of Carter. Chompff continued to lead the way, while Ella Bailey (151) and Calli Palmer (141) contributed solid games. Phillips posted a 184 for Greeneville, and Breana Brown added a 156.
The first Baker game went down to the wire, with Carter holding on for a 133–125 win before closing things out with a 160–116 victory in the second, sealing a 20–7 team win for the Lady Hornets.
Greeneville will return to action on November 8, when the Greene Devils travel to Maryville for a doubleheader against Upperman and Signal Mountain.
