South Greene senior Paisley Brobeck is excited for the opportunity in front of her after she signed her letter of intent on Wednesday to join the softball program at Milligan University.
“I’ve been thinking about this decision for a while now and it feels good to make it official,” Brobeck said. “It’s really exciting to start this new chapter in my life. I’ve been playing softball since I was a little girl, and to get the chance to play four more years with a good softball team is super exciting.”
Milligan’s softball is under new leadership for the first time since Wes Holly started the program in 1988. Cassie Fortner was named the new coach in July and will begin her first season at the helm in January.
Brobeck immediately felt a connection with the players and coaches when she visited the school in Elizabethton, and that was a big reason behind her college choice.
“Milligan is a Christian based school and that was something that was really important to me. I met some of the girls, and they and the coaches were amazing. Everybody was easy to get along with and made me really comfortable immediately,” Brobeck said.
In her junior year at South Greene Brobeck was a big reason the Lady Rebels were able to win the District 1-2A championship. She spent time at catcher and third base, but she is willing to play anywhere at the college level.
At the plate she hit .433 with a .553 on-base percentage. Brobeck had 26 hits with six doubles, three triples and three home runs. She drove in 39 runs and scored 27 runs. Playing 90.2 innings at catcher she had just three passed balls and caught 15 runners attempting to steal.
“I’m willing to play anywhere but my main positions are catcher and third base,” Brobeck said. “They told me that they need a third baseman. That is exciting and makes me want to push harder to earn a spot.”
Brobeck will have to get through basketball season with the Lady Rebels first, but she is excited for her final softball season at South Greene and will be looking to do even better things this spring.
“I’m ready to be leader and to try to help us get as far as we can. I think we have really good team this year that can make a deep run. I’m just looking forward to helping this team,” Brobeck said.
Brobeck plans to study sports medicine at Milligan and wants to help athletes when her playing days are over.
