JONESBOROUGH – Chuckey-Doak made two tough comebacks in the second half on Tuesday night, but ultimately the free-throw line was the Black Knights downfall in a 69-63 loss to David Crockett in the Hardees’ Classic.

“I couldn’t be more proud of the way these guys fought back and didn’t give up,” Chuckey-Doak coach Sam Broyles said. “We challenged them a halftime, and these boys responded. We had to count on our subs and they stepped up. But we missed 16 free throws, and there is your ball game.”

Chuckey-Doak will be back in action at David Crockett on Friday at 4:30 p.m. against Daniel Boone.

Tuesday’s fourth quarter started with Crockett leading 52-49, but in just over two minutes that grew to 62-49. In that run Cam Gouge sank a triple while Caleb Eaves, Nolan Street and Truman Borden all got inside for layups.

Ryland Grindstaff got the Black Knights going with a triple from the left wing, and with 2:06 left to play Dom Atchison rose up and dropped in an eight-foot jumper to close the gap to 62-59.

With 1:23 on the clock Grindstaff sank two free throws to cut the Pioneers’ lead to 64-62.

From that point the Knights had to start fouling to get the ball back and fell 69-63.

In the second half Chuckey-Doak missed 12 free throws, and that doomed the Knights as they could never get over the hump in their comeback effort.

Tuesday started with Crockett getting a pair of triples from Gouge and when Eaves put down a breakaway dunk the Pioneers’ led 13-8.

Two free throws from Jake Broyles cut the lead down to 13-11 heading into the second period.

Two more triples from Gouge early in the second quarter allowed David Crocket to stretch its advantage to 26-13.

Ben Palazzo broke the run with a layup through contact and Knox McAmis followed it with a three-pointer.

Four points from Eaves sent Crockett to halftime leading 33-24.

In the third quarter the Black Knights had to manage foul trouble, but the bench stepped up and gave Chuckey-Doak a chance to take the lead. Atchison led that effort with nine points in the third quarter.

With 4:46 left in the period he ran the length of the floor for a finger roll that closed the gap to 40-35.

Atchison followed that with a triple from the top of the key that made it 42-38, but it was in the middle of a stretch that included five missed free throws. Jake Broyles did make two at the charity stripe to get Chuckey-Doak within one at 43-42.

Logan Malone stole possession under the Black Knights’ hoop with 36 ticks on the clock, and he turned it into two points that narrowed Crockett’s advantage to 50-49.

Aden Britton finished the third quarter with a layup for the Pioneers to give them a 52-49 lead.

Gavin Crum led Chuckey-Doak on Tuesday with 13 points, Atchison had 11 and Grindstaff scored 10.

Eaves led David Crockett with 18 points, Gouge scored 17 and Street 15.
