Six of Greene County and Carter County’s football teams squared off on the gridiron on Friday night atop Rebel Hill in this year’s Greene County vs. Carter County Jamboree.

South Greene hosted fellow county counterparts West Greene and Chuckey-Doak and Carter County’s Hampton, Cloudland, and Unaka. Each team played one 12-minute quarter against a team from the opposing county.

The skills competitions were held beforehand and the results are as follows.

Fastest Back – Skylar Davis (Chuckey-Doak)

Fastest Lineman Over 250 lbs. – Landon Buchannan (Hampton)

Fastest Lineman Under 250 lbs. – Kenneth Debord (West Greene)

Longest Throw – Trent Haynes (South Greene)

Longest Field Goal – Mikey Karriker (Chuckey-Doak)

HAMPTON 32, WEST GREENE 0

The West Greene Buffaloes and Hampton Bulldogs started Friday night’s action. The Bulldogs got the better of the Buffs in a long 12-minute quarter.

The Bulldogs only gained a yard on their first two plays, but quickly started picking up large chunks of yardage after that. Kaden Jones gained 47 yards on a long third-down run and the drive ended with a four-yard touchdown run by Anthony Orton. Bryson Blevins ran in the two-point attempt. Hampton led 8-0 with 8:32 left.

“First drive for them we have them in 3rd-&-long and got a chance to get off the field and they gash a big run on us. It went downhill from there. We didn’t play very well,” West Greene Head Coach Caleb Slover said.

The Buffs first play from scrimmage was intercepted by Alden Cordell. Orton then hauled in a five-yard touchdown pass next for the Bulldogs. Bryson Blevins ran in another two-point conversion and Hampton led 16-0 with 7:46 left.

West Greene managed to move to the 12-yard line with the aid of penalties, but couldn’t find any points. The drive ended the drive a couple yards shy of a first down and touchdown in the red zone.

Hampton then drove 95 yards and ended the possession with a 15-yard rushing touchdown by Ryland Jones. Eli Tester dove into the end zone for two and a 24-0 lead with 3:41 to go.

The Bulldogs received the ball back with 23 seconds left on the 45-yard line and, in true Hampton fashion, left the starters in and scored a 45-yard touchdown from Blevins to Jones. Logan Hughes received the two-point conversion to make it 32-0.

CHUCKEY-DOAK 12, CLOUDLAND 0

The Chuckey-Doak Black Knights showed promise with an impressive 12-0 shutout in their quarter of action with the Cloudland Highlanders.

The first drive began with freshman Brody Myers at quarterback. Myers connected with Cobe Love for a long 54-yard screen pass for a huge gain. In a “change of scenery” moment Brody Myers fired a 10-yard touchdown pass to Kiptyn Ball. The Black Knights led 6-0 with 9:39 left.

Chuckey-Doak moved down the field slowly but surely on the next drive and it resulted in a second scoring play. Junior Kiptyn Ball moved back to quarterback and fired a 10-yard touchdown to Skylar Davis. Chuckey-Doak led 12-0 with only 49 ticks left.

The Black Knights preserved the shutout and walked away with the win.

SOUTH GREENE 26, UNAKA 8

The South Greene Rebels showcased the ability to score on both offense and defense with a 26-8 score against Unaka in their quarter of action.

“We played hard. In a jamboree like this we’re trying to get everybody in and Unaka went right down and scored off the bat and that’s stuff we’ve got to fix as we go into next week. Offense moved the ball and we got two return touchdowns on picks, but we’ve got some stuff to work on and that’s what we’ll do this week,” South Greene Head Coach Shawn Jones said.

The Rebels started with a 10-yard touchdown pass from Dawson Ripley to Simon Burns with 9:46 left in the quarter. The Rangers then drove 70 yards and managed to score in only two plays with a 41-yard screen pass touchdown by Ashton Fuller. Asher Dunn scored the two-point conversion and Unaka led 8-6 with 8:38 left.

South Greene’s Tripp Neas followed by mowing over some defenders and scoring a 15-yard rushing touchdown to regain the lead. Sammy Jones split the uprights and made it 13-8 with 5:26 left.

The Rebels scored twice on defense to end the night. Jaxen Taylor hauled in a 57-yard pick six then Jaden Estepp took a 47-yard interception to the house for six.

South Greene sent the Rebel faithful home happy with a 26-8 win to round out the jamboree.
