Friends and family gathered in the Huskies Den on Thursday afternoon to celebrate North Greene senior basketball player Ella Head as she signed to continue her athletic and academic career at Piedmont University.
“It meant a lot to see all of this support today. It was special to see all of those people here for me,” Head said. “It feels amazing to sign to today. Not a lot of people get this opportunity, and it means a lot to me to get to keep playing basketball. I’m very thankful to get this opportunity to play for four more years.”
Piedmont University is located in Demorest, Georgia, in the northeastern corner of the state roughly equidistant between Greenville, South Carolina and Atlanta.
The Lady Lions play NCAA Division III’s Collegiate Conference of the South. They are coming off a year in which they won the conference’s regular season and tournament titles. Coach Jamie Purdy has led Piedmont for 21 seasons and has won seven conference championship in that time while earning seven Division III national tournament bids.
“I love the coaches at Piedmont. The atmosphere was very welcoming. I was nervous at first to move that far away, but the coaches made me very comfortable with that decision,” Head said.
Head has been a standout guard since arriving at North Greene as a freshman and it was her shooting ability that drew the Lady Lions attention.
“They see me as a shooting guard. Their assistant coach saw one of my travel ball games and liked my shooting,” Head said. “That is something they wanted on this team. But I know I will have to get ready for a faster game and I’ll be one of the smaller players at that level.”
With the Lady Huskies Head has been an important piece on three state tournament teams. North Greene is currently 7-0 in the early portion of the 2025-26 campaign and Head hopeful that the Lady Huskies can make another trip to Murfreesboro in March.
Head moved to North Greene prior to her freshman year and reflected on how important that decision ended up being as she has developed special relationships with her teammates and classmates.
“I just want to leave here on good note. I love the girls here, and they make this place special,” Head said. “North Greene has been really special for me. Coming from a different county and moving here as a freshman ended up being a great decision. This place will always hold a special place in my heart.”
Head plans to major in business at Piedmont and wants to work in real estate once her playing days are over.
