ROGERSVILLE – The North Greene girls basketball team suffered its first defeat of the season on Friday night, falling to Cherokee 49-38 in Rogersville.
The Lady Huskies kept the Lady Chiefs in check for three quarters and held them to only 32 points going into the final period. Cherokee’s explosive offense came into the game averaging 69 points per game and was held to their second-lowest total of the season. But when it mattered down the stretch, North Greene couldn’t find a basket in the fourth and were held to only one field goal.
“As far as the game plan, I thought the kids followed it really well for the most part that we really emphasized transition defense because they have some really talented players and we knew if they were scoring on two or three of us it’s going to be hard to hold them to a low amount of points. But if we could get everybody back and go against five of us, we had a much better chance,” North Greene Head Coach James Buchanan mentioned.
Tralyn Southerland and Cadie McDevitt both led North Greene in scoring with 11 each. The loss puts North Greene at 7-1 on the young season.
Cherokee started with a bang and scored on a layup from Rylee Sivert only six seconds into the game. Kenady Deal scored from three-point territory to make the score 9-4 before North Greene could make a field goal. Josie Graham’s layup with just about two minutes remaining served as their first.
Ella Head sank a three-point shot soon after to tie it at 9-9. Even though they only managed to make two field goals in the first quarter, the Lady Huskies made a living from the free-throw line and went 6-for-8 in the opening period. The teams were tied 11-11 after one.
Natalie Foshie gave North Greene its first lead with a layup to open up the second. Deal responded right back with a layup to tie it again. The Lady Huskies went on a 6-0 run to take a 19-13 lead with a Southerland layup and a McDevitt layup. Cherokee called a timeout and used it to their advantage. They finished the quarter on a 9-0 run to take a 22-19 lead into the break.
The second half started with a layup from Deal. North Greene would go on a 7-2 run to tie the score at 26-26 with five-straight points from Cadie McDevitt. Cherokee scored four-straight next from Deal and Brooke Nelson’s layups. North Greene finished the quarter on a 5-2 run to only trail by one going into the fourth. Foshie’s triple at the end of the period cut the deficit to 32-31.
The Lady Huskies kept themselves in the game by not allowing Cherokee’s high-powered offense to break free and score in bunches for the first three quarters. They weren’t able to contain them in the fourth and the Lady Chiefs began the quarter on an 8-0 run. Addie Lawson, last year’s team leader in scoring, scored six-straight on three-consecutive layups to lead 40-31 with 2:53 left.
Ella Head scored North Greene’s only field goal of the fourth with a three-pointer to cut it to six. She would unfortunately foul out almost immediately afterwards with 2:33 left.
North Greene suffered their first loss of the season with a 49-38 defeat to Cherokee.
“Offensively in the fourth quarter it seemed like we maybe started trying too hard to do some things that were just not there,” Buchanan mentioned. “I can definitely applaud their effort and their attention to detail on the game plan. I was pleased with it.”
Southerland and McDevitt led the Lady Huskies with 11 points each. Deal led all scorers with 19 for Cherokee. Rylee Sivert scored 10.
The Lady Huskies travel to Mosheim on Tuesday night for their next matchup at West Greene.
