The South Greene boys found the offense that had been eluding them in recent weeks on Monday night as they started fast and picked up a 67-38 win over University High.
“We played much better team basketball tonight,” South Greene coach Terry Hoese said. “We did a better job rebounding the ball. We did a better job of moving our bodies and moving the ball. We haven’t played well since the Hardee’s Classic and we’ve struggled to put the ball in the hole. So, it was good to see us return to that tonight.”
In the early going Charlie Lane and Lucas Couch both hit from behind the arc on the way to an 11-8 lead. University’s Mekhi Yocum answered with triple from the left wing to even the score at 11-11.
Over the final 1:50 of the first period South Greene scored 10 points and took a 21-11 lead. Simon Burns knocked down a three-pointer from the right wing and before the Bucs could get a chance to answer Noah Wright stole possession. That led to Gavin Dyer draining a three-pointer from beyond the elbow.
Just before the quarter closed Wright grabbed an offensive board and set up Dyer for a floater from the paint.
In South Greene’s last outing it only managed 37 points against West Greene and before that Unicoi County held it to 42 points. That made the 21-point opening period on Monday a big relief for Hoese.
“We got away from some of that stuff we were doing three weeks ago. But after seeing what worked tonight I think these guys will buy back in and we can keep this up going forward,” Hoese said.
In the first minute of the second quarter good ball movement led to Dyer and Alex Leon both getting open looks from deep and the Rebel’s lead grew to 27-11.
University’s Mason Francis broke the 16-0 run with a jumper from the lane. Then Jameson White pushed the Rebels’ lead to 33-16 when Burns found him open in the corner for a three-pointer.
In the closing minute Couch went the length of the floor for a layup and Cayden Fillers made a free throw to put South Greene in front 38-18 at halftime.
South Greene’s defense allowed just two points over the final six minutes of the first half. They rebounded well and allowed almost no opportunities to score inside.
“We stayed in front of them on defense and we rebounded,” Hoese said. “In the last few games we have been getting beat on drives. Tonight we stayed in front of them, and that is against a group that is good and is athletic as all get out. They can light up, and we beat a good team tonight.”
In the third quarter South Greene went inside to Couch twice while White made another triple as the lead grew to 45-20.
The Rebels finished the third quarter on an 8-1 run that pushed the lead to 53-23. Quick passes from Couch to Lane to Fillers led to a transition bucket. Dyer then hit from three-point land before Burns set up Wright for an easy bucket in front of the rim.
South Greene’s reserves gained some experience in the fourth quarter and good ball movement continued to lead to open looks on the outside. Leon started the quarter with a three-pointer and then Zack Mason hit from deep twice as the Rebels finished with a 67-38 win.
Wright led South Greene on Monday with 13 points, Dyer scored 11 and Couch had 10 points.
For University High West and Yocum both scored nine points.
