The South Greene girls used overwhelming defense on Monday night to shut down University High and pick up a 60-28 win.
“It was good to get everybody involved. Everybody got to play a lot of minutes and it’s good to have games like that every now and then,” South Greene coach Stephen Gregg said. “It was good to get a win, but looking at the stats it didn’t look like a home game. We shot it 75 times and ended up with 60 points. We got 28 offensive rebounds and forced a plethora of steals. I feel like the girls are playing hard, we just need to shoot a little better.”
The Lady Rebels forced turnovers all night long and made it tough for University High to get anything going on offense, but it also took a few minutes for South Greene’s offense to find the bottom of the net despite the extra opportunities.
South Greene went in front at 6-3 with 5:15 left in the first period after Ari Hoese sank consecutive three-pointers. The Lady Rebels played from in front the rest of the night.
Kortnei Bailey scored six straight points by taking steals the other way and South Greene finished the first quarter holding a 16-5 lead.
University High’s Alexa Boynewicz laid one off the glass with 6:30 remaining in the second quarter to close the gap to 15-10. From there South Greene finished the first half on a 21-3 run.
Paisely Brobeck started the run with a pair of buckets from the paint. Hoese followed by taking a feed from Bailey and draining her third three-pointer of the first half.
The lead reached 33-13 with 1:50 left in the first half when Reagan Arrowood struck from behind the arc.
The final points of the first half came with 1:20 left when Alexa Gabbard stole the ball on the baseline and set up Madison Filers for a lay in that made it 36-13.
South Greene’s defense was nearly impenetrable in the late portion of the first half and held the Lady Buccaneers scoreless for the final 4:52 of the second quarter. Bailey, Gabbard, Samantha Birdwell and Trinity Barner led much of that effort from the top of the press.
The Lady Rebels backed out of the press in the second half and the opportunities to score in transition lessened. They still kept University from finding any success on offense and allowed just two points in the first six minutes of the third quarter.
With 2:23 left in the third quarter Arrowood scored through contact on the right block and turned it into three points the hard way to push the advantage to 45-15.
Arrowood used an offensive rebound to set up Hoese for a mid-range jumper, but the Lady Bucs finished the period with Emma Linkous scoring on an inbound play just before the buzzer to close the gap to 50-21.
South Greene’s reserves played most of the fourth quarter as the team exchanged buckets on the way to a 60-28 Lady Rebels’ victory. Fillers and Sadie Knowles both hit three-pointers for the Lady Rebels while University High relied on five free throws.
Brobeck led South Greene on Monday with 13 points, Hoese had 11, Bailey 10 and Fillers 10. Linkous scored 10 points for University High.
