ROGERSVILLE – It was an absolute rollercoaster of a game that saw both teams erase double-digit deficits, but South Greene was the victor in Thursday’s clash with Cosby, 63-60, to open up the Big H BBQ Christmas Bash.
“We don’t need to do that anymore I can tell you that. 17 points is tough to come back on anybody. Very impressive to come back on that bunch. They’re good,” Rebels Head Coach Terry Hoese said.
Cosby’s hot shooting and five three-pointers in the first quarter created a deep hole that eventually grew to 17 points early in the second quarter. It took patience and a better defensive effort that led to South Greene slowly overcoming that deficit and grabbing the lead early in the third. They reached out to a 10-point lead early in the fourth until Cosby went on a 13-3 run to tie it back at 58-58.
Sophomore Gavin Dyer scored South Greene’s final eight points in the final minutes to give the Rebels the boost they needed to cross the finish line first.
Senior Charlie Lane and Dyer both scored 18 points each to lead the way for South Greene. Noah Wright and Cayden Fillers also added 9 points each to help aid them in victory.
Cruz Coggins was a sharpshooter from outside and sank five three-pointers (four in the first quarter) to lead all scorers with 27 points. Darren Chappel joined him in double figures with 18 points.
South Greene improved to 6-5 with the win.
The Eagles started with a 5-0 lead in the first quarter and extended it to 13-2 with a trio of threes from Coggins. Charlie Lane fired back with a triple, but Coggins and Draiden Sneed sank two more to end the first quarter with Cosby on top 19-7.
Cosby led by as much as 17 with the score at 24-7 in the early parts of the second quarter. South Greene cut deep into their deficit with a 10-0 run that brought them within single digits. Simon Burns fooled the defense on a reverse layup to start the run. Cayden Fillers scored the next five with three free throws and a layup. Fillers ended the run with a put-back layup.
Darren Chappel scored eight points in the second and helped Cosby maintain their lead. He scored four-straight and threw down a put-back dunk to bump the margin back to double digits. Gavin Dyer finally warmed up and scored back-to-back layups. Chappel scored four-straight for the second time in the quarter and helped Cosby lead 32-23 at the break.
It took a little bit of time, but Dyer finally got hot and drained two shots from downtown to pull within three.
“He came back out in the second half and saw that first one go down and it was over. I don’t know if he missed another shot after that,” Coach Hoese mentioned.
Charlie Lane had a tremendous third quarter and scored 13 in the period to help thrust South Greene ahead on the scoreboard. A layup by Lane tied the score at 34-34 and a layup by Fillers took their first lead of the game at 36-34. Cosby took the lead back for a brief moment before Lane scored back-to-back three-pointers in the corner to regain it. South Greene led 49-43 after three.
“I just told Charlie in there that’s the best he’s played all year. He was good offensively and put up 18, but he was huge on the defensive end. He’s quick and physical. I don’t know how many steals he got right there to start the second half, but he was just jumping in passing lanes and getting balls. Charlie was huge tonight,” Coach Hoese stated.
Noah Wright scored four big points to help South Greene reach their largest lead at 55-45. That was when Cosby went on a 13-3 run to erase South Greene’s 10-point lead. Cruz Coggins sank a clutch three and laid the ball off the glass to cut it to three and cap off a 7-0 run. Cornelius Carr stole the ball and took it home for a layup to cut it to one, but Dyer torched the net with a clutch triple. Carr perfected another steal and layup and Coggins made a mid-range jumper to tie it at 58-58.
Gavin Dyer broke loose from the defense’s grasp and nailed a big-time triple to get the lead back. Darren Chappel caught a lob and laid it off the glass with thirty seconds left to make it a one-point game. The Eagles were forced to foul and sent Dyer to the free-throw line where he knocked down both attempts and made it a three-point game in the waning seconds.
Cosby had a clean look to tie the game, but a rare miss from the three-point line from Coggins ended Cosby’s chance at forcing overtime and coming back. South Greene outlasted the Eagles and advanced with a 63-60 win.
The Rebels advance to today’s semifinals to play familiar county rival North Greene at 8:30.
