Heavyweight Heartbreaker: Falcons Finish Devils In Overtime

RUTLEDGE – Fans who made the trip to Grainger County on Tuesday night for the district 2-3A championship were treated to a true heavyweight bout. Neither team let its guard down, and it took five rounds — four quarters and overtime — to determine a champion.

Greeneville (7-20), winners of the last seven district titles, faced a Volunteer (16-10) squad that had defeated the defending champs twice during the regular season. When the final horn sounded, it was the Falcons who emerged with a 69-66 overtime victory, claiming the district crown and the No. 1 seed in the Region 1-3A Tournament.

Coach Brad Woolsey spoke about his team’s response after their second loss to Volunteer on Feb. 13.

“The last time we played them, they about ran us out of the gym and scored a ton of points,” Woolsey said. “That can do one of two things: make you hungry and ready to fight, or make you want to lay down. I think it’s pretty clear which one our guys chose.”

Volunteer was led by Tournament MVP Griffin Head, who scored 11 of his 19 points in the first half. Amarion Graves added 15 points, 11 coming after the break. Jeremiah Jones, who exploded for 45 points in the previous meeting, was held to 14, while Lucas Gilliam chipped in 10.

Greeneville also placed four players in double figures. Zy Neal, named All-Tournament and Newcomer of the Year, poured in a game-high 24 points. Taren Claridy added 13, Braylen Kidwell finished with 11, and Yordan Mills contributed 10.

The opening minutes were cautious before Gilliam struck first to give Volunteer a 2-0 lead. Mills answered 30 seconds later to tie the game. The Falcons built their advantage to six behind Gilliam’s five points, Graves’ four, and a three-pointer from Havin Hickernell.

Greeneville chipped away as five players found the scoring column. Neal scored seven in the opening quarter, including five free throws — two resulting from an administrative technical for an incorrect jersey number in the official book. Claridy’s basket with 55 seconds remaining gave Greeneville the lead heading into the second period.

The Greene Devils carried that momentum into the second quarter, forcing steals and converting them into transition baskets. Mills and Kidwell each scored six in the frame as Greeneville stretched its lead to eight midways through the quarter.

Volunteer responded with three-pointers from Herd and Brennen Greene, and Head drilled a jumper with two seconds left in the half to give the Falcons a 33-32 lead at the break.

The third quarter featured six lead changes and three ties. Graves scored six in the period, including a basket with 29 seconds left to knot the game for the final time of the quarter. Neal added five for Greeneville.

Early in the fourth, it appeared Greeneville might secure its eighth straight district title. Defensive intensity and rebounding helped the Devils navigate three more lead changes and two ties. Transition buckets from Claridy and putbacks from Neal gave Greeneville a four-point cushion and a 3-point lead with 2:05 remaining.

But the Falcons refused to fold. Greene cut the deficit to one, and Head scored with 1:07 left to give Volunteer a 61-60 edge. Head split a pair of free throws with 18 seconds remaining, leaving the door slightly open at 62-60.

Out of a timeout, Greeneville executed perfectly. Kidwell found Claridy on a backdoor lob, and Claridy finished the layup with nine seconds left to force overtime.

In the extra period, Volunteer capitalized on a Greeneville turnover to get key baskets from Graves and Jones. Neal answered twice to tie the game, the final time with 1:17 remaining.

William Woolsey, tasked with defending Jones throughout the night, fouled out with one minute to play, sending Jones to the line. The senior calmly knocked down both free throws to give Volunteer a 68-66 lead.

Greeneville’s final attempt from the perimeter fell short, and Graves secured the rebound. He made one of two free throws with 30 seconds remaining, setting the final margin at 69-66. A last Greeneville possession was contested heavily along the perimeter, and Neal’s game-tying attempt missed as time expired.

Both teams will host opening-round Region 1-3A games Saturday at 7 p.m. Volunteer welcomes Daniel Boone, while Greeneville hosts Crockett. Grainger travels to Elizabethton, and Cherokee visits Tennessee High. The four winners will return to Grainger next week to complete region tournament play.
