The North Greene softball team won a wild one in Afton on Friday afternoon, defeating Chuckey-Doak 9-8.
“What a game. It was back-and-forth the whole way, high scoring, lots of hits. Certainly, I thought there was some stuff that we didn’t do well, but we did enough to win and that’s always a good feeling. It’s good to learn in a win rather than a loss,” North Greene’s Head Coach Avery Weems said.
It was a weird one. The game featured 22 hits (11 from each team), six errors, and 17 runs. Hannah Brooks pitched all seven innings and, even though Chuckey-Doak scored eight runs, she only allowed a single earned run. Balls were hit directly off bases, a catcher recorded all three outs in an inning, and much, much more.
North Greene only had nine players available on Friday as much of their squad were still lacing them up on the hardwood as recent as Thursday night. With no reserves in the dugout, they still got the job done.
The Lady Huskies earned win number one on the season and improved to 1-1. Chuckey-Doak lost their fifth straight and dropped to 1-5.
Charlie Turnmire had a stellar performance and defined “timely hitting” and “clutch player.” Turnmire finished 3-for-4 with five RBIs and one run. Each hit scored a run or multiple runs and all three hits occurred in a tied game or a losing scenario.
“I was really pleased with the way she hit. I thought she had good at bats. Timely at bats. Just some big plays for us so we were really proud of her and that was good to see,” Coach Weems mentioned.
Hannah Brooks earned the win in the circle and recorded seven innings with 11 hits, a single earned run, and 11 strikeouts. Brooks had a productive day at the dish also going 2-for-2 with 2 walks and 2 runs.
Chuckey-Doak had four players deliver two hits each. Hayleigh Seidl, Madisyn Miller, Elizabeth Manuel, and Elizabeth Shelton all went 2-for-4. Seidl led the Lady Knights with 2 runs and Miller led with 2 RBIs.
Manuel pitched a complete seven innings and allowed 11 hits, eight earned runs, five walks, and three strikeouts.
Chuckey-Doak scored first in the bottom half of the first with Madisyn Miller’s RBI-double scoring Hayleigh Seidl. Lady Knights led 1-0 after one frame.
The Lady Huskies didn’t respond until the third inning. Matti Phillips led off with a double and Hannah Brooks walked with one out. Charlie Turnmire delivered her first of three big knocks with an RBI-single scoring Phillips to tie it 1-1. Brylee Lutz delivered an RBI-single next, scoring Brooks. North Greene took a 2-1 lead and extended it to 3-1 with Turnmire scoring on a wild pitch.
Weirdly enough, Hayleigh Seidl recorded all 3 outs at the catcher position with three putouts in foul territory.
North Greene’s 3-1 lead didn’t last long as Chuckey-Doak responded in the bottom of the third with three runs to lead 4-3. Seidl came up with a huge RBI-triple to help Hayden Kenney score. Madisyn Miller tied it 3-3 with an RBI-single, scoring Seidl. Elizabeth Manuel regained the lead with an RBI-double, scoring Miller. All 3 scoring players were recorded with 2 outs.
Chuckey-Doak led 4-3 after three, but that lead also didn’t last long as North Greene scored three in the top of the fourth to lead 6-4. Destiny Fillers and Sarah Atnip singled in back-to-back at bats. Just like Chuckey-Doak before, North Greene scored all three runs with 2 outs. Hannah Brooks singled to center, Fillers scored. Charlie Turnmire delivered the second of three clutch hits with a 2-RBI single and scored both Atnip and Brooks.
The Lady Huskies tacked one on in the fifth with Kylee Listek scoring on a wild pitch. The lead was then 7-4.
Chuckey-Doak rallied back and scored four in the bottom of the fifth to take an 8-7 lead.
Elizabeth Manuel singled and was driven home by Aryel Mitchell. The next three runs, once again, were delivered with 2 outs. Elizabeth Shelton reached base on an error and Jessie Dayton scored in the process. Paylin Shelton landed on third base with an RBI-triple and scored Shelton. Tied 7-7, Hayden Kenney bunted and opened a path for Shelton to score from third.
Chuckey-Doak’s 8-7 lead didn’t last long either. That seemed like a trend in this game. Matti Phillips, Chloe Keys, and Hannah Brooks drew three-straight walks to begin the inning. Charlie Turnmire finished her night of clutch hitting with a 2-RBI single and delivered the go-ahead runs with Phillips and Keys touching home.
North Greene led 9-8 after the top of the sixth.
The next two frames featured three-up and three-down until the bottom of the seventh arrived. Aryel Mitchell led off the bottom half and reached safely on an error and ended up on second base. The Lady Knights had a runner in scoring position with no outs, but Hannah Brooks shut the door on them and recorded three-straight outs to end the game.
North Greene defeated Chuckey-Doak 9-8 after a full seven.
North Greene hosts Morristown East next on Thursday at 5:30. Chuckey-Doak travels to Happy Valley on Monday at 5:00 for a conference showdown.
The Lady Huskies will have a full staff next week as much of Coach Weems’ lineup was competing in Murfreesboro in the Class 1A State Tournament in basketball. “We’re certainly excited to have them back out with us,” Coach Weems stated.
