Greeneville 13 – Burlington 11
Greeneville and Burlington traded blows throughout Wednesday night’s second game of their three-game series at Eastman Credit Union Field, with the lead changing hands five times before the Flyboys pulled away for a 13-11 victory. The win improved Greeneville’s record to 18-21 on the season.
The Flyboys struck first in the bottom of the second when Deacon Nelson drew a bases-loaded walk, forcing home Jackson Berry for the game’s first run.
Burlington answered with three runs in the top of the third to take a 3-1 lead, but Greeneville responded with a five-run inning in the bottom half. Ruben Zuany and Gabe Gray each delivered RBI doubles as the Flyboys reclaimed the advantage, 6-3.
The Sock Puppets weren’t finished. Burlington scored four runs in the fourth and added another in the fifth to move back in front, 8-6.
Greeneville answered with its biggest inning of the night in the bottom of the fifth. Matthew Cash and Levi Pinder each drove in two runs before Zuany launched a two-run homer over the left-field wall, capping a six-run outburst that gave the Flyboys a 12-8 lead.
Burlington made one final push, scoring three runs in the top of the eighth to pull within one. Greeneville responded with an insurance run in the bottom of the inning, and the bullpen kept the Sock Puppets off the scoreboard in the ninth to secure the 13-11 win.
Cash paced Greeneville’s 13-hit attack with a 4-for-6 performance, collecting four singles. Zuany finished with a home run and a double, while Nelson added a double and a single.
Cody Blair earned the victory with two innings of relief, allowing one run on three hits while walking two and striking out one. Kerim Durmaz recorded the save, pitching the final 1 2/3 innings. He surrendered one hit, walked two, and struck out one.
The rubber game of the series is scheduled for Thursday at 7 p.m. at Eastman Credit Union Field on the campus of Tusculum University. The Flyboys will celebrate Teachers in the Bleachers and Thirsty Thursday, with all teachers receiving free admission with a valid school ID.
