GREENEVILLE, Tenn. — Carson-Newman University picked up a 3-0 victory over Tusculum University in South Atlantic Conference men’s soccer Wednesday night at Pioneer Field.
The Eagles (5-4-2, 3-2-1 SAC) scored twice in the first half and added a goal early in the second half against the Pioneers (1-7-1, 0-4-1 SAC), and finished with a 10-8 shot advantage in the match.
Tusculum’s best scoring chance in the match came in a span of a few seconds near the 20-minute mark. A shot from the left side by Zeljko Stanojevic rocketed off the left post and came across the box to Nicholas Slewion, but his attempt was deflected wide on a dive from Iva Steggo Forsse from Carson-Newman.
The Eagles went ahead 1-0 at 24:25 when Mitchell Honcoop fired a free kick from 20 yards into the top right corner past Tusculum keeper Hayden Michalak. Honcoop would trigger the second goal for the Eagles at 38:39 as his corner kick went off the hands of Michalak and was deposited into the goal by Dan Coles for a 2-0 Carson-Newman lead.
Carson-Newman went ahead 3-0 at 47:48 as a series of passes ended up with Samuel Ulrich scoring his fourth of the season. The Pioneers had six of the eight shot attempts in the second half, but Forsse had saves on Slewion in the 68th minute and Stanojevic in the 84th minute.
Michalak had two saves in the first half and Gavin Roux made one save in the second half for the Pioneers, with Forsse tallying three saves for his third shutout of the season.
Carson-Newman had a 6-3 edge in corner kicks over Tusculum, and the Eagles were called for 18 fouls to 15 for the Pioneers while receiving three of the four yellow cards.
The Pioneers will take on Wingate on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 3:30 p.m. at Wingate. The Bulldogs lost 1-0 at Coker on Wednesday night and are still looking for their first conference win over the season (0-4-2) while sitting at 3-5-2 overall.
